3 different catchers got starts in this series. Used to be a good bit more common, though many teams just let the third catcher catch bullpens and handle emergency duties. In 1939 Yankee team was a terrific team that kept Arndt Jorgens on the roster all season. He appeared twice for a total of 3 innings. Handled two chances perfectly (Strike three! Nice receiving there, Arndt!). No one attempted a steal against him. He did score a run, though not being credited with a PA. I can only assume that he was a pinch runner. Would seem to be an odd choice to use a 34- year old catcher playing out the string in his last season. In his previous 2 seasons, Arndt had appeared in 11 games in 1937. And 8 in 1938. All of these seasons he was on the roster the entire season… 👀 |
