Yes, a tear or two welled up in my eyes. It still amazes me that some Yankee faithful unfairly criticized Derek Jeter, with denigrating comments like "Saint Jeter" and "fake hustle" and believed any tabloid narrative for a player that never had a single social faux pas, an ignorant statement, or backwards sentiment uttered during or after his time in Pinstripes. Where are all those former HeAmyHa posters that preferred the likes of Robinson Cano, excusing him for jogging to first while condemning Jeter for running hard as being "an act" to garner attention? Well put, brother. I was unable to come out to play yesterday, but I wanted to enter an amicus curiae brief here. That "St. Jeter" horsesh*t used to really grind my gears, but I kept my mouth shut in the interest of preserving forum harmony. And what in the world is "fake hustle" anyway? Is that one of those dog whistles I keep hearing about for playing the game the way it was meant to be played? You phrased it perfectly -- no fox paws or ignorant statements or anything that ever embarrassed himself or the team. If you can't appreciate Derek Jeter, and his unique place in Yankee history, you should find yourself some other team to root for. The forerunners of those guys would have blasted Lou Gehrig. Don't need them.

Willy Adames reacts like a little kid after meeting his idol. He gets it. I can't root against this guy now. Just a beautiful clip.

If you can't appreciate Derek Jeter, and his unique place in Yankee history, you should find yourself some other team to root for. The forerunners of those guys would have blasted Lou Gehrig. Don't need them. Jeter seemed to spur a special kind of jealousy out of his detractors. Ruthie’s ex husband was one of the bozos that used to be heard to say “Jeter the cheater”. That one I never quite understood. In an era where there WERE plenty of real cheaters, the only way you could pin that tag on Jeter was the cretinous usage of a school rhyme. If there is one way to just knock the halo a bit sideways, at least we can recall the stories reporting that he used to send the models he dated off with a gift package in appreciation. “Ooh, sorry. You didn’t win the potential finalist position in the Mrs. Jeter contest, but you do get this fine package including the Derek Jeter Home Game, where you can open the door to YOUR mystery date.” Maybe we can also assume he didn’t remain chaste until his wedding night. Just a good guy all the way around. And some day, I swear I’m going to find a way to prove that he wasn’t at all a bad short stop. People so ached for his failure. I recall 1994, his age 30 season. At the start of spring training ‘95 some idiot reporter asked him about his “down year”. His answer was “I hit .292 with 23 homers. If that’s a down year I’ll take another year like it.”… And it was said without an ounce of anger, ins respectful and confident tone…
