The infielder Vivas is left handed, has a high OBP and more walks than strikeouts last season. Looks like a good trade. I guess Gonzalez replaces Wandy.

Vivas is a year younger than Sweeney, is playing at AAA rather than AA like Sweeney and was putting up fairly similar offensive numbers. Plus he plays second and third, whereas Sweeney seemed stuck in a numbers crunch at SS. I do trust Cashman on relief pitchers, so Gonzalez will probably be serviceable.

Agreed. A great move that I prefer to see versus prospect hugging until the kid becomes non-viable…

Vivas was the #10 LAD prospect per MLB.com. Now, MLB.com lists Sweeney as their #18 prospect. So, at least on their scouting reports, we upgraded from one IF prospect to a better one. Feels like the Dodgers just had a first world problem of needing to clear two 40 man spots with too much talent to do so painlessly so we got a nice deal out of it. On our side, we had the 2 40-man spots for the lefty reliever and left handed IF prospect. On the Dodgers side, Sweeney was probably the best prospect they could get that didn't require a 40 man spot, so that's the explanation on their side.
Seems like a good move for us. We needed another lefty reliever so doesn't hurt to take a flier on one. And then in the IF, we have bodies but not necessarily a ton of reliability. Volpe seems entrenched at shortstop but question marked around him. Torres is obviously a good starter but he's in the last year before FA and if they team ever wanted to move someone to offset some of the payroll adds of Soto and possibly Yamamoto, you figure he'd be first to go. DJ is the starter at 3B right now but he's been declining for years and they've always made efforts to turn him to a utility guy vs. everyday player. And then at 1B we're hoping for a Rizzo bounce back but he's older, had injury problems and possibly in his last year here. Peraza hasn't broken through yet. Feels like a good chance that over the course of the season with injuries that we'll end up giving Vivas a real look next year.

Will miss Sweeney but trade feels ok??? I think so, Dome. Gonzalez is only going to be 28. He had his shoulder cleaned up in 2022 and came back “okay” last year. He’s an extreme ground ball pitcher so hopefully won’t be bothered by the dimensions of Yankee stadium. Career 9-4, 3.22. I believe he’ll be a decent middle innings guy…
