Reggie! Reggie! REGGIE! REGGIE!
Darned good candy bar, too. I was a fan.
In one Strat-O-Matic season I had him in my roster, and another manager wanted him. I could tell he wanted him too badly. I finally said I didn’t need anything back for him, just give be your first round draft choice for each of the next three years. Expecting to be refused, but the deal was accepted, thereby assuring my franchise of more future success and dooming the other team to horrible last place finishes.
Reggie didn’t get platooned as he should have been in that league and wound up with a .220 lifetime average, albeit with a few HR tossed in…
To make it worse the other manager thought that HE would be picking my first round picks. As he put it, “I would have picked you some one decent, like maybe Bucky Dent… uh… no…😂

I have always felt Reggie Jackson was remembered as an all-time great based mostly on his 1977 World Series performance. IMO, he was rather one dimensional, only hustled when he felt like it, was a terrible team player and a huge egotist. I know many Yankee fans who agree with me, but also many who do not. Reggie is an obvious Hall of Famer due to all of his exploits but a big chunk of his exploits were accomplished in an Oakland A's uniform. Because of this, I wouldn't have retired his #44, five years with the Yankees isn't enough.

I'm sort of in the middle on Reggie Jackson. On the one hand, he was often a repellent egomaniac who actually seemed to believe his own BS. And he only had five years with the Yankees, and often as you say was not exactly busting it out there. On the other hand, I do think there was/is another side of him that is more aware, who really was grief-stricken when his frenemy Munson was killed and who at some deep level loved being a Yankee and being part of that tradition. I would say he's never been an easy guy to fully embrace, although he was definitely one of the most compelling players to watch that I have ever seen. So I get it when people love him and I get it when people can't stand him. I admit early on I was in the "can't stand him" camp, but I've mellowed toward him over the years. I thought he was better than Mr. May! And yet that one October night was and remains magical to me. It was one of the 1 out of 10 great moments of our once glorious past. And I also recall that on his 4th at bat, he almost hit another, or is my ancient memory already distorting what happened? It was a genuine time of WOW.

Reggie is not on good terms with Yanks...now working in a capacity with Astros.

Back when Reggie hit that third homer I had decided to record the game on a now long last 8-track tape. The recorder also had a microphone and I would add a few remarks in. When I played it back I was surprised that it actually sounded just like I was one of the guys in the booth.
Sort of odd that years later when my son was nearing his teens I once overheard him say to one of his friend, “When my dad talks he sounds just like the weatherman on TV”… 😂

Reggie is not on good terms with Yanks...now working in a capacity with Astros. That's a shame because Reggie was a mainstay during spring training in Yankee camp.

I said that tongue in cheek, but the reality is that the Yankees apparently didn’t feel they had a role he could fill. The Astros did and Reggie accepted a job with them. That doesn’t bother me at all. Great players can play ball, but some of them after other talents and some don’t. I’d be tickled if the Yanks fired him someday, too. If they needed him. There’s not room for all the players after they retire…

Rizzuto was my favorite, even if a game was boring, Rizzuto could always give me a good laugh. Another one of my favorites for MLB and the NFL was Curt Gowdy. My favorite NFL team was Pat Summerall and John Madden. I loved John Madden. Even read three of his books as a youngster. Continue to play his video game. I will never forget when Madden said that games are won and lost in the trenches. For example, the Jets and Giants the last few years.

For example, the Jets and Giants the last few years. He had that right for sure. Learned so much from his books about football when I was young and they were funny too. One knee equals two feet! (for counting as inbounds for the pass catcher)

My favorite NFL team was Pat Summerall and John Madden. I always got a kick out of Don Meredith and how he would rib Cosell. That was a good broadcast team, out of the 3 of them Frank Gifford was my favorite.
