We gave up a lot for a rental and it looks like the prospects of him staying are slim and maybe none! My question is, what makes this trade a success to Yankee fans?

If the Yankees re-sign him.

I think it is only a success if he puts up great numbers (doesn't have to win MVP) and he makes the lineup much better. Soto cannot win the World Series for the Yankees or even get them there on his own. It will not be his fault if the pitching falls apart again, or multiple everyday players miss months of playing time.

While winning a ws would make it a win of a trade , re signing him is what would truly make it a success . But even if he doesnt re sign , that trade was a no brainer . You have to give quality to get quality . And the thing is , king is just a 2 year rental and is basically living on borrowed time as a starter after blowing out his elbow from the bullpen . And the prospects from that trade are far from proven .

Yep. As someone once wrote: “The basis of optimism is sheer terror.” If you think Hal's going to open up the Steinbrenner coffers for 4-5 hundred mil for twelve years, good luck. That's the least Boras/Soto will ask for. If you also think Hal just might do that via the Ohtani-Dodgers method, not only will Hal still balk at even that, but watch MLB temper such options via a newly imposed team tax over next December's Winter Meetings.

Besides the odds of hal opening his wallet enough to resign soto who is a boras client is not very good at all . I call it a realistic expectation until proven otherwise .

How do we know that this trade wasnt simply for a one year rental to sell tickets after losing 40% in ticket sales after last season? And btw they wanted to keep cano which is why they never traded him and they still lost him to free agency . And he was home grown . Heck over the last ten years , they have signed just 2 or 3 big name free agents that they tried for . And they almost lost judge and cole until hal stepped in the end . I am not saying they wont try to re sign him . Just saying until he is re signed , it is realistic to think that soto is a one year rental

If there is a good side to “the sign him, don’t sign him” conundrum it’s that the Yanks and Soto get a year to test each other out and see if there’s a fit. No need to fret about it now. Next winter will be a different story. I’m just going to watch the story unfold and hope we get a top season out of Soto…and win a LOT of games…
