for Yankees: Aaron Boone!
---------------------------------------
Aaron Boone had a blunt first reaction to learning that the Orioles had traded for Corbin Burnes.
“That could be a little bit of a problem,” Boone said.
The Yankees manager was able to chuckle about it Saturday, two days after the trade went down to bring the former Cy Young winner into the AL East and onto an Orioles team that won the division and 101 games last season.
Though the Yankees had been linked to Burnes in their pursuit of rotation help earlier in the offseason, their lineup will now have to deal with the tough right-hander, likely on multiple occasions this season.
“Obviously an amazing pitcher going to a great team,” Boone said at the “Pinstripe Pride” autograph signing event at the American Dream in New Jersey. “We’ll see a lot of him and look forward to the opportunity to compete against the best.”
The last time the Yankees saw Burnes, he threw eight shutout innings against them for the Brewers in September at Yankee Stadium.
But instead of the Yankees swinging a deal to have Burnes (in his final year before hitting free agency) pitch behind Gerrit Cole, the Orioles swooped in this week to add a proven ace to their young rotation.
A few weeks before the Orioles pulled off the Burnes trade, the Yankees filled the hole in their rotation by signing Marcus Stroman to a two-year, $37.5 million contract.
“He’s got some good stuff,” catcher Jose Trevino said Saturday. “I’ve talked to a few catchers that have caught him and just seeing what their take is, they’ve given me some good information. But watching his film and seeing what he likes to do, I think it’s going to be a good [addition].”
Still, the Yankees’ rotation is set to enter spring training with some question marks behind Cole.
whiile Stroman had a tough second half of last season with injuries (after an All-Star first half), Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes are both coming off brutal seasons that were derailed by injuries as they combined for a 5.92 ERA across 127 ²/₃ innings .
Clarke Schmidt will also be trying to build off throwing a career-high 159 innings.
“I think with health, we’re going to be really good,” Boone said of his rotation. “But it’s early February. So we got a long ways to go. I’m excited about some of the depth that we’ve replenished but also guys that are pushing up. I think there’s going to be some people that surprise there.
“But I’m really excited about some of the guys — especially like Carlos and Nestor coming off injury-riddled seasons, I’m excited about the winters those guys are having and where they’re at. Obviously bringing in Marcus.
“We feel like it has a chance to be really good, but we gotta go make it happen.”
The same could be said for the Yankees’ bullpen, which will have to make up for the loss of reliable lefty Wandy Peralta, who agreed to a four-year, $16.5 million deal with the Padres earlier this week.
Another free-agent option to return, Keynan Middleton, has agreed to a deal with the Cardinals, but Boone left the door open for further additions before pitchers and catchers report to spring training Feb. 14.
