rodon finished 5th & 6th in the CY voting the 2 previous seasons. his line overall was 2.67 era, .998 whip and 12.2k/9. that's ace territory. wanna call him a #2. fine. they're not paying $162 mil to be a #3. folks need to forget about last season. have a feeling we'll see the pitcher we traded for. he was embarrassed and reported to camp in great shape. expect a return close to form. and yeah he has to stay healthy. but you can say that about every player. But its more of a valid concern with rodon , he has a pretty lengthy i jury history Just like Snell, Rodon could have a very good season. But it is far from a guarantee. And even at their best Snell and Rodon never log the workload we expect from Cole every year.

But that being said , i dont understand why they arent going after monty instead , dude is practically a work horse innings wise and would likely come cheaper with a shorter deal than snell

He's missed time due to injury in each of the last 7 seasons. That's should be deeply concerning.

Must have been a ten day stint in 2022, since he made 31 starts. Thanks for pointing that out, though. I knew he had a lot of injury history, but I didn’t realize it was that extensive…

Maybe it is Cashman, maybe it is Blake, maybe the analytics department, but someone one or some group in the Yankee hierarchy just does not think a lot of him. I liked Monty but he is at best a #2 and on a good staff a # 3. I don't think I'd go over 4 years at $24 M per or him and I think he still aims to get more.

I guess if the Giants were still in it they would have ben SOL for a starter that year. I wonder what his innings limit is this year ?

He is a decent pitcher, but his rep is built mostly in his first 5 starts in St. Louis and his stint with Texas last year. Both are small samples. Other than that he’s been middling…

Montgomery is pitching when guys like Rodon and Snell are watching from the hot tub !

Montgomery is pitching when guys like Rodon and Snell are watching from the hot tub ! There have been plenty of CYA winners that weren’t the best in their league that year. Recent selections may have been a bit more reflective of the “best” since wins are no longer held in such high regard. Cy Young Awards are only slightly more indicative of talent than those near meaningless gold gloves handed out year after year…

I wonder what his innings limit is this year ? I'm calling BS on this As recently as this Sunday, the Giants were still planning on sending Rodón out for his final start. However, Rodón’s agent, Scott Boras, told The San Francisco Chronicle on Monday that his client had reached an innings limit. Since the Giants are eliminated from the playoffs, risking an injury would have been unwise. www.knbr.com/2022/10/04/giants-shut-down-carlos-rodon-ending-dominant-individual-season/

At least the wording here suggests that had the Giants still been in the race, Rodon would have pitched…

He had thrown 178 innings, which was his career high, after a 132 inning season. After major surgery, you'd expect that he'd only go 15% over his previous season, which would have been 151 innings. Given that he was going into free agency, this was a smart move by Rodon and Boras. I expect the Yankees to load manage both Cortes and Rodon while relying heavily on Cole, Stroman, and Schmidt to pitch every fifth day. They can do some of that with off days or pulling them earlier when we're up big, but there will still be room for spot starts and bullpen games. The thing that concerns me is that everyone I trusted in those spot starts is now pitching in San Diego. We might have to see what we have in Beeter and W. Warren and I guess Hampton is in the mix though realistically a year plus away. Beeter is on the 40 man, so he'll likely have the first shot.
