He had thrown 178 innings, which was his career high, after a 132 inning season. After major surgery, you'd expect that he'd only go 15% over his previous season, which would have been 151 innings. Given that he was going into free agency, this was a smart move by Rodon and Boras. I expect the Yankees to load manage both Cortes and Rodon while relying heavily on Cole, Stroman, and Schmidt to pitch every fifth day. They can do some of that with off days or pulling them earlier when we're up big, but there will still be room for spot starts and bullpen games. The thing that concerns me is that everyone I trusted in those spot starts is now pitching in San Diego. We might have to see what we have in Beeter and W. Warren and I guess Hampton is in the mix though realistically a year plus away. Beeter is on the 40 man, so he'll likely have the first shot. Rodon's surgery was in May of 2019. He shut himself down due to "normal soreness" in 2021. www.chicagotribune.com/2021/09/30/carlos-rodns-5-shutout-innings-in-his-final-regular-season-start-is-a-big-box-checked-whats-next-for-the-chicago-white-sox-starter/
I could see Schmidt hitting a wall this year.

I could see Schmidt hitting a wall this year. I think the only thing that is definite for Schmidt is that he will change this year. I don't think he's got ace potential but his delivery is smooth and I think he'll be durable. He's handled workload in the past, so innings shouldn't be a huge issue. I see him as a reliable #3 at his high, but he could regress back to spot starter type.

At least the wording here suggests that had the Giants still been in the race, Rodon would have pitched… That's the piece I was calling BS on ... and it was a useles last start of the season.

Yeah but we are talking about rodon since he is a yankee . But that being said , i dont understand why they arent going after monty instead , dude is practically a work horse innings wise and would likely come cheaper with a shorter deal than snell My theory if that the same people who thought he should be traded for a center fielder in a walking boot still do not have a very high opinion of his talent. Maybe it is Cashman, maybe it is Blake, maybe the analytics department, but someone one or some group in the Yankee hierarchy just does not think a lot of him. I liked Monty but he is at best a #2 and on a good staff a # 3. I don't think I'd go over 4 years at $24 M per or him and I think he still aims to get more. Well if blake is one of those people then it just proves he isnt the miracle worker that people think he is . But i think its cashman being too stubborn to admit he was wrong

I read stuff about Stanton dropping pounds but this is beyond anything that I imagined. He looks 40 pounds lighter. How does a guy do that in 22 weeks ? Did he live off kale and salmon since the season ended ? It seems that he always takes his training one step too far. I am rooting for him but that photo does raise some concern.

Less weight lifting could help too.

Less weight lifting could help too. I am sure changes in his fitness routine made a difference. I've never seen a baseball player reduce that quickly. Even the football guys usually take a year or more to cut down that much. I respect how Stanton has gone about his business. I hope he contends for an MVP. I am just astonished at how much weight he dropped.

Hope Stanton also worked on not swinging at curveballs in the left-handed batters' box.
