The yankees have been routinely blasted for spending on free agents since the late seventies. It does not seem to me that LA gets anywhere near the same level of criticism for the fortunes they spend now as we did.

I haven't heard anyone complain about all the money the Angels spent on free agents during the late 1970's.

The Mets take the cake. How much are paying Scherzer and Verlander to NOT pitch for them?

I think fans have started to become numb concerning how much money professional athletes make.

while they were the big spenders for a couple years, this season the dodgers payroll is $245 mil while ours stands at $303 mil.

They can defer the Othani contract for 100 years with no tax ramifications and he doesn't get investigated for the gambling situation. Can you imagine if either of that happened with the Yankees.

I'm still amazed people hate the Yankees. We haven't won it all in forever. Houston, the Dodgers, hell even the Braves have been better than us. But nope, we're still MLB enemy #1.

It will be interesting to see if the Dodger model of deferring salary becomes the new trend. I'm not smart enough to know the long term ramifications but if others teams feel it is giving LA a competitive advantage, they will follow suit. I think there were some rumors that the Yankees tried to offer one of the FA pitchers a contract with alot of deferrals but they balked at it.

Ohtani and Yamamoto both wanted the Dodgers and they played them and MLB to the fullest.

I think you'll still some partial deferred contracts since they have been around for a while, but not many players are willing to defer a majority of their salary like Ohtani did. They want their money now. Plus, it was easier for Ohtani to defer so much of his salary since he makes over 40+ million in endorsements.

The present value of Ohtani's 70 million salary is included in the Dodger's 2024 payroll for tax purposes. I think it's around 46 million.

AND he was taking advantage of Japanese tax law, which differs from American tax law…
