Going into the season I wasn't a big fan of the way the BP was constructed. I don't think there is much question, at least IMO, that they have been pretty good. I still have an uncomfortable feeling that the early success is not going to be sustainable. I'm curious, which guys in the pen would you trust in a big situation in a big game:
Hamilton Ferguson Holmes Weaver Burdi Santana Marinaccio Gonzales

I don’t like the way the pen is constructed at all. They need a couple more reliable arms in there. I trust only Holmes (for now?) and maybe Hamilton. They’ve done it with smoke and mirrors so far. The underlying k rate is actually not good at all.

I don't think it's ideal right now, but it's also not a weak spot they need to immediately address.
I would imagine Gil will be on an innings limit and eventually shifted to the pen, at least in 2024. He could be a monster there. Beeter is another internal option who could make an impact. Kahnle/Effross/Trivino could all help.
And maybe they will make (a) deadline deal(s) if needed, they almost always seem to trade for at least one reliever.

The jury for me is still out on the pen. I still am not comfortable with Holmes as the closer, especially after seeing what Oakland has. I liked Hamilton, but the last two or three games, he looked shaky. I never feel I know what we will get from the others. With out starters, who seem to have a very hard time getting through six, the pen is a concern

I still have an uncomfortable feeling that the early success is not going to be sustainable. I'm curious, which guys in the pen would you trust in a big situation in a big game: Hamilton Ferguson Holmes Weaver Burdi Santana Marinaccio Gonzales Cashman likely sees Kahnle, Trivino, and Effross as future additions to the bullpen and some of these guys as serviceable placeholders. The problem is there are no real shut-down arms in terms of velocity with riding fastballs with late life. I was surprised to see Weaver hitting 97-98 on the radar gun. Burdi has great stuff, yet unharnessed at times. Hamilton has the slombio, which is more or less unhittable when it is breaking late. Santana has a good slider. Marinaccio a deceptive fastball and change-up, when he commands both. Holmes has a heavy two-seamer and a sharp breaking slider and only needs one of those to be working to get batters out. If he has both, the only problem is self-inflicted walks. Gonzales is similar to Wandy Peralta, though he has not established himself in big moments yet. Ferguson is good if he's got command. Essentially, a lot of potential and ifs that depend upon command. Night in and night out, it is like a box of chocolates. I like Holmes because the home run is not his kryptonite; it's his arm slot. I think he's still learning how to pitch with this repertoire and make in-game adjustments. I just wish we had at least one big, burly 100+ mph fastball/curveball guy or with a splitter - just as a different look. It seems we're too enamored with change-ups and two-seamers.

yup agree they've actually been pretty good. 6th best w a 2.98 ERA and the most saves 13 out of 16. overall don't have a lot of confidence long term but it's hard to complain because for the most part they've gotten the job done. wish there were more hard throwers though.
and actually the hated holmes is the only guy i really trust. 12 innings no ER, only 1 walk, 9 of 10 saves. even hamilton has had some hiccups lately. not saying we couldn't do better than holmes but think they're happy w him so a closer isn't on the shopping list.
help is on the way. when cole returns, either schmidt or gil moves to the pen. and has been said, kahnle, effross and trivino should be back at some point. and finally they could add at the TDL.

I just hope it continues.

Kopech may be available...ChiSox are already in the tank. I saw Kopech during AZFL when he was in the Red Sox organization. Actually, I heard him before I saw him...catcher's mitt sounded like a car backfire.

For the few dumpster dives that worked out for Cashman in the pen he had just as many injury ridden mistakes. This is the MLB roster and a few of these boys need to step it up. For as good as the Pen may be statistically our eyes from the games saw they were nail biters.
