Alex Wood starts for the A's. This is his 12th MLB season and the A's are his 5th team. Frequently injured, he's managed to make 30 starts in just one of those seasons, and topped 25 starts in just five of them. In 2017, he had his best season for the Dodgers team that lost the World Series to the A's in 7 games. He went 16-3 with a 2.72 ERA, led the majors in winning percentage. He got Cy Young votes and made the All-Star team for the only time in his career that year.
He had a mediocre season for the Giants last year, He was 5-5 with a 4.33 ERA, starting 12 games and relieving in 17 more. In 97 2/3 innings he gave up 98 hits, 52 runs, 47 earned, 17 HR, 30 BB and K'd 131. His WHIP was a solid 1.24. When his 3-year deal with the Giants expired, he signed a 1-year deal with the A's. This year, in 5 starts, he's having a miserable time as the A's notional #1 starter. In 5 starts, he's pitched just 21 2/3 innings, giving up 33 hits, 19 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 11 BB and struck out 20. His WHIP is a horrific 2.032 and the Opposing Hitters' quadruple slash line against him is .359/454/.587/1.041, exaggerated by a preposterous BABIP of .435. And it's not a question of one bad start, he's been hit pretty hard in 3 of them, and has allowed more hits than innings pitched in all five.
Despite being in the Majors since 2013, Wood has never faced the Yankees, not even once. Six Yankees on the current roster have faced him, and you won't be surprised that most of them were primarily NL players.
Repertoire: Wood is a 3 pitch lefty. His pitch mix has been relatively stable the last several years, though he's throwing his FB and slider a bit more this year so far, and his change less. His FB velo is down from last year, but it's still early in the season, and it's down by just 0.7 mph. He has a 91 FB he throws not quite half the time, and 82 slider he throws about 30% of the time and an 85 change he throws about 22% of the time.

Nestor Cortes goes for the Yanks. In his first 5 starts, he appears to have made a nearly-complete comeback from his serious shoulder problems last year. His velocity seems to be all the way back. His average velocity is down just 0.4 mph from his career year in 2022, but that might be due to pitching mostly in cold weather so far this year. We've all seen him hit 93 and 94 multiple times this year. In his 5 starts so far this seasons, he's 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA. In His WHIP to this point is an excellent 1.07. He's been a bit of a rollercoaster this year, throwing shutout ball for 8 innings in one start, 7 in another, and getting hit pretty hard by the Astros early in that start and by the Guardians as well. He's still surviving on the the FB and cutter up and up and in to get whiffs and popups, and the change and slider on the back door to get takes for strikes and chases.
He's appeared in 5 games vs. the A's; he started 2 and finished 2 others, 3 relief appearances total. He's 0-1 against Oakland with a 4.15 ERA. In 17 1/3 innings, he's allowed 15 hits, 8 runs, all earner, 2 HR, 10 BB and K'd 18. His whip against the A's is a poor 1.442. In his only game against them last year, he gave up 6 hits, 2 BB and 2 ER in 5 innings while striking out 4, but got a no-decision in a 7-2 Yankees win at the Stadium in early May. The A's team quadruple slash line against him is: .221/.329/.353/.682
