I wasn't in the game thread at the end of the 7-2 loss to the O's, so I didn't get to do what I usually do after the last game of series: a mini-preview of the next series. So here it is, in all its "glory"...
Tonight's game is 7:07 pm on YES: Reese Olsen will oppose Marcus Stroman. Olsen is 0-4, but has pitched well in 4 of his 5 starts. His ERA is 3.18 and his WHIP is 1.305. In 28 1/3 innings, he's allowed 26, 12 runs, 10 earned and struck out 26. He's yet to allow a HR and the one blemish on his record is that he's walked 11. He's 0-4 because the Tigers have scored a total of 3 runs in 5 starts for him while he's been in the games pitching. Stroman hasn't pitched well since throwing back to back 6-inning shutout efforts to open the season. He's now 2-1 with an ERA of 3.69. His WHIP is now a very poor 1.421.
Tomorrow's game is 1:07 pm on YES. Casey Mize for the Tigers and Clarke Schmidt for the Yankees. Mize is healthy again for the first time since 2021, and he's off to a good start this year: In 5 starts, he's 1-0 with an ERA of 3.08 and a WHIP of 1.215. He's struck out just 18 in his 26 1/3 innings, but has only walked 6, and given up just 1 HR. Clarke Schmidt goes for the Yanks. He's 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 6 starts, and may have just thrown his best start of the season last time out, giving up just a leadoff HR to Henderson, and going 5 2/3 innings in the series opening 2-0 loss in Baltimore.
Sunday's game is the usual half-hour later than the normal matinee starting time, 1:37 pm on YES. It doesn't get any easier; power lefty and Tigers' ace Tarik Skubal for Detroit. He's 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA (6th in the AL) and leads the league with a WHIP of 0.736. He's striking out more than 10 per 9 innings, has not allowed a run in 3 of his 6 starts, and allowed more than 3 in only 1 of the 6. And, oh, he's given up all of 2 HR in his 36 2/3 innings. Nestor Cortes goes for the Yanks. He's 1-3 in 6 starts, and has had 3 good starts and 3 not-so-good ones. His WHIP is good, 1.095, but the ERA is only OK, 3.86.
Last note: For those who think the Yankees' offense is still too HR-centric, this is then a very bad series matchup. Together the 3 Tigers' starters have allowed just 3 HR total in 16 starts and 91 innings, and the warm weather of the last couple of days disappears again this weekend. All 3 days have forecast highs in the 50s.
