It would be a very Yankees thing to do, let a player come back before healing 100% from an injury.

After considering this myself for several weeks, I’ve decided he’s healthy. We can no longer blame thirty missed spring at bats for the issue.
I think he may have developed some habits to protect the area of pain when he first got back on the field. Even 5 AB at the end of spring may have gotten him past that point, but the Yanks wouldn’t give him that for fear of a re-injury.
I’m going to make a supposition here, that he was likely taking dry swings. I’ve seen golfers that enjoy taking dry swings in winter, think they’ve made a couple magical tweaks and then hit the course in the spring thinking they’re going to have a great season only to find out that they have no idea where the ball is going.
There’s nothing like real competition no matter the sport. I believe it’s still all about timing. It’s hard to believe that he could go from a record HR season to a season at a similar pace but with missed time to this point in one season…

I thought maybe Judge was playing hurt, but he didn't look hurt when he went 3-4 vs the Brewers.

It's all about recognizing spin and t-im-ing, tim-ing, timi-ng....timing.

It's all about recognizing spin and t-im-ing, tim-ing, timi-ng....timing. Yep...pitch recognition, although easier said than done.

Definitely a game of failure, when having success thirty percent of the time can mean Hall of Fame. Baseball players have to be supreme optimists to endure long stretches of ineptitude. As our great American philosopher Yogi Berra said, 90 percent of the game is mental; the other half is physical.

I think you are likely correct but did find it interesting that the author pointed out he doesn't seem to be using his hips as much. I'm not an expert so it's hard for me to notice this. I'm not even 100% sure that a "swing flaw" such as this would necessairly be injury related. I often lose the mechanics of my golf swing and am unable to "feel" it.

Absolutely, there's an old golf adage about mechanics "what you feel is not real." Judge might be healthy enough to play but gotten into some bad habits from the core injury, as Inger opined. I noticed at the beginning of the year, he looked stiff, squeezing the bat, and off-balance. What has really surprised me is his strike zone recognition for sliders away. He is really falling prey to them. He's also missing a ton of cookies - albeit maybe one per at bat. Still, he has six home runs, and Judge usually hits them in bunches. In a week he could be leading the league in that category. It's an extended slow start. I can remember Jeter having one of those, only to record something like 50 hits in a month later in the season.

I think the actual quote was 90 percent is half mental, the rest is physical…but point taken…
