yankees literally hit on all cylinders in this one w hitting & pitching.
tossup for potg but will go w verdugo for both his offense & defense. gil honorable mention w judge & soto making big contributions as well. only yankee left out in the cold was torres.

Slider low/away, 2-2, Cole Slaw takes 2nd on defensive indifference.
Grounder to short, Cabrera runs around his backhand, bobbles, grabs it in mid-air, throws him out, game finally over.
Yanks win 10-3, to get to a season high 11 games over .500 at 24-13.
They move back into a tie for first with the O's, who lost to the Nats. O's still lead by percentage points.
Jays lost to the Phils 10-1.
Rays beat the White Sox 5-1.
Braves got 2 in the 8th to beat the Red Sox 4-2.
Yanks gain a game on everyone except the Rays. who've bounced off 4 games under .500 to win 5 in a row and move out of the cellar.
They're now 4 1/2 up on the Sox, 5 up on the Rays and 7 1/2 up on the Jays.

3rd star of the game: Soto again, in the middle of everything...3 more hits, 2 more runs.
2nd star: Gil, who gave up the solo shot to Tucker on the 2nd batter of the game, then shut the Astros down for 5 2/3 after that.
1st star: Verdugo with the big 3 run response shot in the 1st, another RBI single for the 4th run, another single, a good catch in the corner, an even better diving catch on a sinking liner after losing it for a moment in the lights.

forgot about volpe w a HR and 3 RBI also contributing. 8 of the 9 guys in the lineup had hits.

Game 2 is tomorrow at 7:07, unfortunately on Prime Delayed Video, which means I'll have to find a gamecast, and I'll be 3-4 pitches behind all night.
Rookie Spencer Arrighetti schedule to go for the Astros, and he's having a dreadful time so far in his first shot at the majors. 0-3 with an 8.27 ERA, just one HR allowed in 16 1/3 innings and he's struck out 21, but allowed 22 hits and 10 BB for a WHIP of 1.959. The rollercoaster ride known as Carlos Rodon goes for the Yanks. The O's beat him up for 8 runs, 6 earned, in 4 1/3 innings in his last start after he threw 2 excellent games in a row
OK, I'm off to watch the Rangers game for as long as it lasts.

Actually, I don't. Remind me, maybe it'll come back to me. Trevino rolls over on a sinker down and in, grounds into a 6-4-3 DP to end the inning and kill the threat. Top 9, 10-1 Yanks. Bregman, Pena and Singleton for the Astros last licks in the 9th Still 3-3, 3:45 left in the 3rd. It was an actual 45 record put out by Mad. Mainly it consisted of a guy belching. I actually don't remember this, but it's just like them. Must've been before I was old enough to be a reader. But I do remember...(also to the tune of The Caissons Go Rolling Along). Football facts, baseball lore, we remember every score as the barflies...go gabbing...along. ... For it's hi, hi, hee, if some rummy don't agree, shout out your answer loud and strong: SEZ YOU!!! ...and on and on like that. |
