I was looking at Austin Well's stat line and it is really unusual. In 71 PAs he only has 10 hits but he has 13 BBs and only 9 Ks. He's putting the ball in play but seems to be hitting in a bit of bad luck until you dig a bit deeper. His hard hit percentage has dropped from 42% last year to about 36% this year. His average exit velocity has dropped from 90 to 86. Small sample size and I do know he seems to have hit some hard balls at people and was robbed of a hit by Stanton's poor base running but the underlying numbers are trending in the wrong direction. I still think there is a chance he can turn it around because he seems to have a pretty good eye and is pretty selective.

His expected line is .274/.402/.514 so it seems he's hit into really bad luck. I think he'll turn it around.

Fred Lynn’s 1993 All-Star grand slam remains the only one in the history of the grand old exhibition. Lynn also has the second most HR in ASG history with 4.
Amazing that only Musial hit 6 of them. What a man was Stan!…
Lynn was a team mate of both Cal Ripken, Jr, and Tony Gwynn, Sr….

Wells is 9 for his last 24 at bats for a .375 BA, so he's starting to find some turf. A few games ago, Cone remarked that he has been the most unlucky hitter in baseball according to some stat. His swing looks good, but he found himself in a ton of 0-2 counts early in the season and when he did put a good swing on the ball it was right at someone.

Two hard hit balls tonight, young fan robs him of a ribby, last ab hard hit ball that RFer makes a good catch on taking away a hit. Could have easily been 3 for 4.

I guess I'm an old-timer, because the way I see it, your average is what you are. He's a .200 hitter. I don't buy these advanced stats that say that someone is "hitting into bad luck".
The biggest concern I had with Wells at the beginning of this season was his defense. In the first couple of weeks, he literally looked lost behind the plate. He's looked much better in his last 5 games or so. Honestly, when he wasn't playing offense or defense, I thought his leash was going to be very short but none of the other catchers in the minors were hitting either. Now Rice is on fire but the Yankees seem determined to get him reps at first base either as insurance if Rizzo goes down or possibly a career position change.
The good news is that Wells' bat is showing signs of life and his defense has looked better too. He's bought himself a longer leash.
