That will keep the pitch count down.

Gil has had games where he’s battled through walks. This is the first time we’ve seen him battle despite not quite having his best stuff. He seems up to any task…

Gil with a double play! He's grinding. Really like his ability to compete.

Change at the knees, not called, 30-40% strike on Gameday Change above and inside of middle, fouled off. Change inside jams Rosario, and he gets a big break, the soft liner goes right back to Gil, who catches and easily doubles Parades off 1st. Inning over.
Top 5, 4-0 Yanks. 14 pitches for Gil in the 4th, 58 through 4.
Top of the order for the Yanks in the 5th: Volpe, Soto and Judge.

Weird game. Now Gil's pitching to contact - but it's working.

He seems up to any task… It helps that... 1) The Rays are a free swinging team, not patient, and 2) Teams don't really have a full "book" on him yet. I wish the Yanks would graduate a pitching prospect who has not just elite stuff, but also solid command. Just once in a while, for a change.

Nellie: Flash has never had a slump. Flaherty: My whole career was a slump.

Slider in the zone down and in for a strike to Volpe Cutter inside, 1-1 Takes a crushable FB thigh high more or less down the middle, 1-2 Sinker misses inside by about 2 inches, called strike 3 anyway. Rortvedt clearly yanked it back to the corner, and got a call.

Sinker on the corner away 0-1 on Soto Soto gets a crushable sinker just below middle-middle, but is late and under, fouls it off, 0-2 Cutter outside, 1-2 Sweeper with big break, but winds up in a bad spot, middle of the plate thigh high, and Soto's on it, lining it to right for a 2-out single.

Soto is such a good two-strike hitter. Better not make a mistake.

Cutter right in Judge's wheel-house, middle of the plate below the waist, and Judge doesn't even get his best swing, just drops the bat and inside outs it way out to right, 2 run HR makes it 6-0 Yanks!!!
