There's a reason the Yanks did not protest the game, guys. Boone, after the game: "...by the letter of the law, it was probably the right call.”
“I don’t know what Juan [is supposed to do],” Boone said. “You can say, ‘He’d better get there,’ but once he commits to getting there and he’s trying to stay out of the way, if Neto catches it, he might catch it on the bag for a double play. It's like, ‘Where do you go?’ So, obviously a tough way to start things when you load the bases there in the first inning and you’ve got a really good pitcher on the ropes.”
The umpire who made the call, Carapazza said this: "“The only time [the runner is] protected is if he was on the base just standing there,” Carapazza said. “So I had him interfering with the infielder and called the infield fly first, which now, the batter is out. The interference after that was the second out.”
(Underline emphasis mine)
As I say, it sucks that Soto's courtesy and late lunge created the bump, but he has to be ON THE BAG, STANDING STILL, in order to avoid getting called for interference. As for what he could've done differently...maybe just fall to his knees and slap the bag with his hand and hold it there, decreasing the chances of a bump?
Perhaps the infield fly rule should be changed, but it almost certainly won't be. Not unless this play happens a lot more often.

I do think that we all need to realize that a call of interference does not indicate intent…

"6.01 (a): It is interference by a batter or a runner when...
(10) He fails to avoid a fielder who is attempting to field a batted ball, or intentionally interferes with a thrown ball, provided that if two or more fielders attempt to field a batted ball, and the runner comes in contact with one or more of them, the umpire shall determine which fielder is entitled to the benefit of this rule, and shall not declare the runner out for coming in contact with a fielder other than the one the umpire determines to be entitled to field such a ball. The umpire shall call the runner out in accordance with Rule 5.09(b)(3)."
What does 5.09 (b) (3)say?
"5.09 (b) Any runner is out when...
(3) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball."
And then the 5.09 (b)(3) refers back to 6.01 (a)(10).
(Underline emphasis mine)
It sucks because it was just unlucky, but I think the call was correct, according to the rules.

I do think that we all need to realize that a call of interference does not indicate intent… You are correct, inger, and that part is well known to many fans. An interference call on Soto does not require that he intended to prevent or hinder Neto's attempt to catch, only that he hindered him, intentionally or not.

What I find interesting about this is that the Umpire said the only time the baserunner is protected is if he is standing on the bag. I do not see that specifically stipulated in the rule. Perhaps it is covered somewhere else but in that situation MLB said the Umpires had discretion to rule differently. I'm having a hard time understanding the difference of standing on the bag and being 1 foot off it trying to get back to avoid being tagged out. If that was indeed the right call and doesn't permit the Umpire to have discretion then it is a bad rule.

An interference call on Soto does not require that he intended to prevent or hinder Neto's attempt to catch, only that he hindered him, intentionally or not. The focus should be on the infield fly rule, a rule the umpires invoked. The rule is in place to eliminate double plays on routine fly balls. (see: sabr.org/journal/article/revisiting-the-origin-of-the-infield-fly-rule/). Did the fielder really have such a hard time catching that ball or was he attempting to "deek" the runner. Whether the ball is caught, fumbled, dropped or allowed to fall, the rule is there to protect the runner.

I'm in the midst of making tofu with scallion/cilantro/peppers, minced ginger and garlic in a spicy bean sauce with added chili crisp and sesame oil...on a bed of rice. sounds yummy. pretty close to what i had last night sans the cilantro but adding asparagus from my garden over david chang momofuku noodles. sided it w bok choy in sesame oil and ginger.
as we speak, prepping asparagus (eat it almost every day at this time of the year with the garden producing a bunch daily) w cherry tomatoes and beyond steak sauteed w garlic and jalapeno over tricolor pasta topped w romano cheese (only locatelli of course). I love bok choy, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find a Chinese restaurant the puts bok choy in their Wonton soup.

I went to David Chang's Momofuku Ko restaurant before it closed in NYC. One of the best meals I've ever eaten. I had 6 excellent Chinese restaurants that I used to eat at that are no longer in business.
I mentioned weeks ago Sun Luck (Elmhurst, Queens). There was also...
Lum's (Flushing, Queens).
Lucy's Chung's (Chinatown, Manhattan).
King Yum (Fresh Meadows, Queens).
Bill Hong's (East 56th st. Manhattan).
Dragon Seed (Jackson Heights, Queens).

I love asparagus ...lightly sauteed with garlic or roast them. Have you had garlic scapes or ramps? They are delicious. Ramps are essentially wild leeks. They are in season right now. you can make compound butter with ramps. I dehydrate them for multiple usage, Sauteed ramps in olive oil added to pasta with grated cheese. I haven't had asparagus in a long time. I like them either steamed with melted butter added to them, or fried after they are dipped in egg and seasoned bread crumbs.

Terrible call. What is Soto supposed to do in that situation? He's got to be allowed to go back to the base. BS. Boone thrown out. Yep terrible call, is Soto supposed to stay off 2B so he can get tagged out? What a joke.

I eat the bottom stalks on broccoli. Well cooked and not too thick.. I love cauliflower and broccoli sauteed with garlic. Me too. And thank you again for recommending that Irish butter. I think I mentioned to you that their cheese is excellent too.

Is Kay suggesting to limiting Gil by placing him in the pen when Cole returns? Oh hell no!
Gil is showing why at the start of the season I said that I'm a big fan of Gil and that I hope he gets a chance to start. I figured he would be a good pitcher, but not this good.
Too early to call him an Ace, but he's pitching like one.

I've always liked Kay, but he seems to be developing a case of Sterlingitis, starting sometime last year. I think sometimes he doesn't watch the OFers when a flyball is hit, because sometimes he makes it sound like the ball was hit further than it actually was.

O'Hoppe hr only a hr in 3 parks O'Hoppe, looks like he's going to be a good player. He was traded by the Phillies for Marsh. So far that looks to be a good trade for both teams. I give the slight advantage to the Angels because it's harder to find a good Catcher than a good OFer.
