Yankees' lineup vs. Ginn: He hasn’t faced them before, and none of them have ever faced him, so here’s the lineup for tonight instead, minus Soto, a late scratch because of the sore knee after yesterday’s collision on the terrific sliding catch into the wall in foul ground in right against the Mariners:
1. Torres (2B) 2. Wells (C) 3. Judge (RF) 4. Chisholm (3B) 5. Stanton (DH) 6. Rizzo (1B) 7. Grisham (CF) 8. Volpe (SS) 9. Verdugo (LF)
On the bench: None
============
A’s Lineup vs Cole: Gerrit Cole matches up with Ginn. Despite his vast advantage in experience, few of the A’s in the lineup and on the roster have ever faced Cole:
1. Butler (RF) has never faced Cole 2. Rooker (DH) hasn’t faced him either 3. Bleday (CF) hasn’t faced him as well 4. Langeliers (C) is 1-3 with 2 K 5. Brown (LF) is 0-3 with 1 K 6. Gelof (2B) hasn’t faced Cole 7. Soderstrom (1B) has also never faced Cole 8. Wilson (SS) hasn’t faced him either 9. Schumann (3B) hasn’t faced him as well
On the Bench: Nevin is 1-3 with 1 GIDP; Cameron is 0-2 with 2 K; pitcher McFarland is 0-1 with 1 K; Allen (SS) is 1-3 with 1 K

Poteet has been activated and in a slightly surprising move, Ronnie was DFA'd. Marinacchio must have pissed in someone’s cornflakes…

Yesterday: the Yanks and Mariners had another tight, low-scoring game. Clarke Schmidt struggled in the first, giving up 3 hits and 2 BB, but would’ve out of the inning with just 1 run allowed if Jasson Dominguez hadn’t lost a flyball in the sun with bases loaded and 1 out. The two unearned runs proved decisive; Jazz Chisholm hit a 2-run HR in the 4th, that was it for the scoring as starter Logan Gilbert and three relievers dominated the Yanks, striking out 15, giving up just 6 hits. Gilbert went 6 for the win, improving to 8-11 on the season; Schmidt took the tough-luck loss, giving up just 1 earned run in 5 innings, dropping to 5-4. Flamethrowing closer Andres Munoz struck out the side in the 9th on 14 pitches for his 22nd save. The loss broke the Yanks’ 3-game win streak, dropping them back to 25 games over .500 at 89-64 with 9 games left to play.
At Camden Yards, the Giants rallied from 3-2 down in the 9th on a RBI single by Schmitt, but O’s clutch man Anthony Santander hit a walk-off 2-run HR in the bottom of the 9th against Giants’ current close Ryan Walker, and the O’s averted the sweep, 5-3. Gregory Soto got the last two outs after closer Seranthony Dominguez blew a save by giving up Schmitt’s single; he got the win to get to 3-5 on the season. Walker took the loss, dropping to 9-4.
In Texas, Kevin Gausman and four Toronto relievers combined for a 2-hit shutout, striking out 10 and the Jays beat the Rangers 4-0. Vlad Guerrero, Jr. provided most of the offense: 3 runs, 3 hits, 2 RBI with a 2- solo HRs, his 29th and 30th. Gausman got the win to get to 13-11 on the season. Prospect Kumar Rocker gave up the first two Jays’ runs in three innings, getting his first MLB decision and loss.
In the Ugggh!Dome™ in Tampa, Zack Littell extended his shutout streak to 18 2/3 innings by throwing 7 scoreless innings of 1-hit ball with7 K’s, and the Rays beat the Red Sox 2-0. The Rays drove in both runs on outs: a sac fly by Brandon Lowe in the 3rd and a RBI grounder by Dylan Carlson in the 7th. Littell got the win to improve to 8-9 on the year; Brayan Bello was the hard-luck loser, allowing 1 run in 5 2/3 to fall to 14-8. Lefty Garrett Cleavinger retired three straight right-handed pinch-hitters in the 9th, striking out 2 for his 6th save.
In other games of importance to the AL Wild Card chase…The Guardians walked the Twins off again, with Andres Gimenez singling in the 10th to drive home ghost-runner Jose Ramirez for a 3-2 Cleveland win, winning the series 3-1 as well. Eli Morgan stranded the Twins’ ghost-runner with a scoreless 10th and got the win, going to 3-0 on the season. Caleb Theilbar gave up Gimenez’ single, falling to 2-4.
The Tigers had the day off after sweeping the Royals in Kansas City.
The O’s picked up a game on the Yanks, moving to 4 games back with 9 to play, and the Yankees’ Magic Number for the divisional title stayed at 6. In the Wild Card chase, The O’s and Royals still hold the top 2 slots, but the Twins’ loss dropped them into a flat-footed tie for the 3rd Wild Card with the Tigers. Both teams have the same Magic/Tragic Number: 10. The Mariners are two behind both; their tragic number is 8. The Sox are 2 behind Seattle with a tragic number for elimination of 6. The Rays are 1 behind Boston with TN of 5. The Jays and Rangers are both 2 behind Tampa, with a TN of 3.

In games of import tonight:
The Jays went to the DebacleDome™ in Tampa to begin a 3-game series with Rays and both teams barely clinging to a chance at the playoffs. The Rays just finished off 1-0 win, with Jonathan Aranda's solo HR in the 6th the only run of the game. Berrios threw another terrific game for the Jays, but will not be rewarded with his 17th win of the season. Kevin Kelly got the win in relief to get to 4-2; Berrios took the loss to drop to 16-10. Hunter Bigge pitched a 1-2-3 9th with 2 K's for his first 1st career save.
The Yanks had best make hay while the sun shines: the Orioles are hosting the Tigers, but tonight it's the red-hot Tigers taking a beating: the O's are up 7-0 in the bottom of the 8th. Corbin Burnes threw 7 shutout 8 innings for the 2nd straight start, and the O's have five home runs, Santander's 43rd, and two each by Cowser, now up to 23, and McCann, who now has 7.
The Twins were hoping to turn their dreadful slide in a 3-game series against the Sox in Fenway. Minnesota has lost 20 of their last 30 games to fall from a commanding position as the 3rd wild card into that tie with Detroit. The Sox haven’t been any better: 9-17 in their last 26 and 23-34 in the 2nd half. The game is tied 1-1 in the 7th. Ex-Yankee farmhand is making the Verdugo trade look worse and worse every start: he threw five more shutout innings tonight, and is unscored on in 3 starts and 15 2/3 innings. The Sox' run came in the 4th on a Trevor Story RBI single; the Twins finally answered in the 7th on a RBI grounder by Carlos Correa.
The Mariners traveled to Texas hoping to stay alive in the Wild Card race with a 3-game series against an all-but-eliminated defending champ Rangers team at Globe Life Field. DeGrom made his 2nd start since returning from Tommy John surgery and lasted 3 innings, giving up a solo HR to Josh Rojas, his 8th. George Kirby is still in for the M's, and gave up a 2-run single to Nathaniel Lowe, to make it 2-1 Rangers, but the M's just got a 3-run HR from Julio Rodriguez, his 17th of the season, and have the lead back, 4-2, top 5.
And at 9:40 pm in the Coliseum, it’s Cole vs. Ginn.

One thing you have to love about Soto, he has no off button like Torres! Guy plays to win! He loves the game, something lots of players today lack!

The Tigers got a run in the 9th; not nearly enough. O's win 7-1, and the lead is down to 3 1/2 games for the moment.

Game underway. Sinker on the corner away, lined over first, just fair for a single, Butler was playing him that way, preventing a double.
