Gerrit Cole opens the Series for the Yanks, as he did against the Royals in the ALDS. As with game 1 vs. the Royals, he’ll be on very long rest, 9 full days, so his command might not be good enough tonight. In the regular season, Cole was 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA. In 17 starts, he threw 95 innings, allowing 78 hits, 38 runs, 36 earned, 11 HR and 29 BB, while striking out 99. His WHIP was a solid 1.126. In his three playoff starts, Cole hasn’t pitched all that well. Quite frankly, he’s been hit hard in all three, but in the series clinching game 4 against the Royals, a lot of them found gloves. He was knocked out in the 5th in game 1 of the ALDS, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 1 HR, 2 BB and 4 K, but got a no-decision when the offense rallied to win 6-5. In game 4, he got the win with 7 innings of 1 run ball, striking out 4 and walking none. In game 2 of the ALCS, he was knocked out in the 5th, allowing 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and 4 BB while striking out 4. He left with a 3-2 lead, but couldn’t make it through 5 for the win.
Cole is making his 9th career start against LA, and they haven’t gone very well. He’s 4-2, yes, but with a 5.01 ERA. In 46 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 53 hits, 27 runs, 26 earned. Just 2 HR and 19 BB, but 41 K’s. His K/9 vs. LA is just 7.9, way below his career mark of 11.7 or even his postseason mark of 10.9. His WHIP against the Dodgers is a mediocre 1.350, and the Dodger team quadruple slash line against him is .283/.333/.412/.745. Not awful, but not good, either. His last start against the Dodgers was a pretty good one in a pretty awful day for the Yanks: the day Judge got hurt running into the wall to make that great catch off J.D. Martinez’ drive to deep right in the 8th inning. Cole went 6 innings to get the win, allowing 4 hits, 1 earned run, walking 2 and striking out 5. Cole got to 7-0 for the season, but Judge’s injury torpedoed the season for the Yanks. The offense never recovered from the two huge injuries, Rizzo and Judge.
This is Cole's 21st postseason start: He’s 11-6 with a 2.98 ERA. In 120 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 92 hits, 44 runs, 40 earned, 19 HR, 32 BB and struck out 146, with an outstanding WHIP of 1.028. It’s just his 3rd World Series start. In the 2019 World Series, the Nationals hit him pretty hard in game 1: 7 innings, 8 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 BB, 6 K’s and 2 home runs in a 5-4 Astros loss. He rebounded in game 5 with the series tied at 2 on the road in Washington, going 7 innings again, but this time getting the win, allowing 3 hits 1 run (a solo HR), walking 2 and striking out 9, getting the win, 7-1.
