Below is an analysis I made for Wade a day ago (so it doesn’t include last games performance):
Wade seems to have turned a corner since May 21st. Since then he has been on base in 24 out of 25 games played with a .307 batting average and an OPS just north of .800 with 8 doubles, 2 triples amd 2 HRs. This is consistent with his numbers last year in Scranton where he hit .310 with an OPS of .842.
Wade’s calling card is his defensive ability that allows him to play all over the field at an above average to borderline plus level. He has very good instincts, a solid arm and excellent speed. This season in the minors Wade has played 32 games at SS, 5 at CF, 4 at 2B, 4 at LF, 3 at RF and 1 at 3B. What is truly amazing is that he has made only 5 errors while rotating all over the field.
Offensively Wade has the necessary skills to profile as a high on base player who could bat ninth in the line-up and act as a second lead-off type guy. His power is more “to the gaps” which he uses well given his speed. Wadw has shown very solid bat to ball skills in the minors with a 21% K rate this year in Scranton in line with last years 20%.
However Wade has not been able to translate this production to the majors where he has clearly been a bit too passive translating into a much higher K rate (almost 30% for his career) with little hard contact (about 15% which is half MLB average). His inside the zone swing rate has been at 70%, below the MLB average of 75%. Wade has not been bad in the majors when ahead on the count (273 / 429 / 455) but is yet to get his first hit when behind in the Majors this year.
Wade could be an ideal fit as a utility player that leverages his defensive prowess. He could fit well in the line-up thanks to his left handed bat, solid contact skills and above average speed. He still however needs to show that he can translate his abilities into production at the major league level. Many prospects struggle a bit to adjust to the Majors. Wade is the type of player that will get more chances to see if he can perform. The question is whether this will hapeen with the Yankees or another team.
So what do you think? Will Wade become a solid major leaguer? Will he get another chance with the Yankees? Will he be traded?
