Just saw a Heyman interview. He said he thinks there is a chance Soto gets a bigger deal than Ohtani because he is younger and really seems willing to play anywhere. He felt Ohtani was really only considering the Dodgers. Heyman said if he had to bet today it would be the Mets followed by the Blue Jays. Just an opinion of course but there really is a lot of smoke around the Mets. Perhaps they are leaking stuff to get teams to drop out or maybe they will do whatever it takes to sign him. That fact that Soto played a year in Pinstripes, at least IMO has no bearing on where he ends up. I really think both he and Boras want a record deal here and will take the highest bid. IF Cash has any relationship he should ask to be able to match the best offer but I'm not sure that would even work because I think Boras would keep negotiating until all but one team dropped out. However this plays out I sure hope it's done before Christmas and before other FAs start signing. One thing for sure, we can count on a couple Soto stories each day before he signs. REality is starting to set in with me and while I don't believe everything I read about these negotiations I'm beginning to feel it is very unlikely that Soto returns to the Bronx. See, I am the opposite. I think if Soto was for sure going to go to the Mets he and Boras would have told them during the meeting knowing they could pay him the most of all the teams. I think all this drama is to get Hal and Cashman to drop the big bag for them and not get off with a discount. I really think he wants to stay a Yankee. I also do not think Toronto or any other team outside the NY teams are really in the running.

At the end of the season I was desperate to re-sign him at almost any price. As the off-season has developed, I’m beginning to feel a bit sick about the whole saga. If he is actually minded to stay with the Yankees, but is playing the field so as to extract a full price from Hal, then this is something I can stomach as long as it comes to a conclusion soon. If he gets a 600/650/700m dollar offer from Cashman and turns it down for even more $$$ from the Mets, then frankly I’m not sure that he ever deserved to be a Yankee in the first place. And after all, although I loved watching him hit more than anyone I’ve seen since Mattingly, the truth is that he’s a very weak outfielder with a horrible sense of position. A generational hitter, but DiMaggio/Mantle he ain’t. How much more than 50m a year would Mantle command today?

I just don’t think we should over-imply causation there. The Yankees are a huge payroll team. They can afford to pay stars AND have good players throughout. The issue is that they’ve been terrible on handing out contracts. Rodon - $27M Stanton - $22M Stroman - $18.5M DJ - $15M Hicks - $10M dead money Rizzo - $6.5M dead money If the Yankees re-sign Soto and end up with another incomplete roster around him, Judge and Cole it won’t be because there wasn’t money left for others. It will be because they’re pissing it away on flat out bad or overpaid players. And that’s my fear with the “let Soto go and sign multiple pieces” approach. What indications are there they’d do that right? Pretty much every player they’ve signed in recent years who wasn’t a no-brainer talent like Judge or Cole has been a total failure. Their free agent evaluations have been god awful. I have zero faith their major league scouting will be able to identify 2, 3 or 4 good signings if they split up the money they’ve allocated to Soto.

Cano became McCann, Ellsbury, Beltran and Tanaka. Yamamoto became Stroman. Wagner became Farnsworth. They will definitely still go for it and spend if they lose Soto, but Soto is such a sure thing. Potential Plan B players, not so much.

Bob Klapisch reporting says that Hal is 100% committed in being competitive with any contract offers from other teams. Buckle up boys should be a stressful few weeks coming up!

Other than relievers and backend starters, I have to agree with you. Acquiring position players who perform at or above expectations has been a turnstile of mediocrity, injury, and expiration dates that arrive too early.

I'm pretty sure if Soto signs with another team that the Yankees will use the money that they were going to pay Soto to sign other players. That's the issue. Signing Burns and getting another closer helps. There isn't anyone out there as good as an in the start of his prime Soto. Most options are old or question marks. That "OTHER" superstar is not out there. They can spend and bring in quantity but it's not quality. In my opinion, there's no replacing Soto, But Cashman can't force him to re-sign with the Yankees. What the Yankees can do is improve their pitching (Burnes)and try to make up for some of the offense (Santander or Alonso) they would lose if Soto signs with another team.

If he’s signed he’s signed. Outside of my circle ⭕️ of influence. If he’s back I’ll certainly root for him. I’ll hope it all works out. I have no Soto hate. Love to watch him at bat, I’m just a realist when it comes to the ripple effect of keeping him, and his lack of fielding and baserunning skills…

Granted, none of the other free agents are better than Soto. But, because of injuries there are no sure things. The Yankees signing Burnes and either Santander or Alonso are just a couple of good plan B options.

The Yankees signing Burnes and either Santander or Alonso are just a couple of good plan B options. Guys like that eat up payroll and can prevent a team from spending on someone better in the following off-seasons. McCann and Beltran's production dropped off, but their price tags stayed high. They were not like the O'Neills and Tinos we added in the good years. Ellsbury became a heavy albatross contract and he was the "prize" of the bunch. Tanaka was fine but going 1-4 on expensive free agents isn't very good. Both Montgomery and Snell were still on the board (and others I can't remember now) when the Yankees settled for Stroman. When Snell gave in and took a short deal, we no longer had the money to get him. Now we have 18.5 million devoted to Stroman in 2025 and possibly 2026 if he reaches his innings incentive, and he's a guy that didn't merit throwing a single inning in the post season in a year where we reached the WS. None of the Plan B options are the sure thing that Soto is. None are 25 year old generational talents. They can and should sign some other players if they lose Soto and maybe it will work out, but pivoting to Plan B is not one of Cashman's strengths. I feel like he gets too desperate and signs guys in haste and in the process he overpays for non premium talent to make sure he got something.
