$75! I was spending $19.95 for sneakers and felt like the price had gone through the roof… it took me 5-6 hours to earn that much… I remember I was blowing through my first paychecks with the paper. Being financially prudent was not a priority for me at that time. Single, making decent money, focused very much on having a good time. And I must admit I had a good time. Before I was married, I once bought a really nice Polo Winter Oxford for $72 dollars with only $75 in the bank. No worries. Sarah used to tell that story all the time.

Plus you still had three bucks left over for an emergency. When we first got married, my wife and I used to say that our financial plan revolved around getting to the ATM first.

I wore Converse similar to these most of all in high school. Red and white for team colors. By the time you were of age for those they had become cool. Mostly the high tops. The Converse of the seventies were usually low-top, often slip ons rather than sneakers. There was a stronger demand for moccasins then, but they were too expensive for most. So like, hey man. I didn’t mean to dis your shoes, man… 😂

I think I was making about $3.54 per hour, with the saving Grace being that I only had Sundays off (the store was closed), so I worked 64 hours per week (every hour we were open). Of course I had a couple part time jobs on Sundays, at one point four of them.

I broke both of my ankles at different times (once wearing low tops) and had to get my ankles tapped before games and wear ankle braces.

I hope you're pain free these days.

If I would have played tennis and golf in high school, I would have been fine. Unfortunately, with the size and location of my school, tennis and golf were as likely as Quidditch.

I could almost turn tennis into a contact sport. Golf? No, but I def had an all out shoulder turn and an Arnie Palmer type power swing. I did NOT let the club do the work for me. I wasn’t going to hit anything 325+ that way. Keep in mind, I’m line those under 6’ Cy Young Award winners in one way. I’m under 6’ tall. The levers are not that long. I had to find more power…

Jack routinely knocked the inserts out of his drivers! Arnie was no short-knocker either. One of the longest hitters I ever played with was about 5'8" - though he did have long arms.

I quickly found that if I couldn’t be long I’d feel like wearing a dress out there. Like Mantle talking about Pete Rose hitting all those singles… 😂 My nephew is 5’ 3” on a damned step stool. He told me he didn’t like golf because he only went to the driving range once and he hit every ball down the middle at about 300 yards. Hmm. He’s strong for his size, I’ll admit that. But I wondered down the middle of what. I also know that distances on a driving range can be deceptive. He MIGHT have caught up to one for 225 or so. Maybe a miracle found him 240…

Maybe a miracle found him 240… Yeah, I've had many people tell me about their wonderful ability at the old golf game. Usually, they are individuals who look as athletic as toads. My stance is usually, "Well, let's go to the range and show me your swing!" They have to prove those 300 yard drives down the middle to me.

I also found I was not much more accurate with my 3 wood off the tee, though my last couple of years I also unlocked the power in that stick and was seeing some sweet 275 yarders or so. I think until then I had babied it a bit, trying to hard to hit it straight. Once I got my weight shift into every club in the bag, everything became 20-30-40 yards longer. It was all straighter, too… but more edge of the rough/fairway than down the middle. I can still see some of those shots I “pured” down the middle. That means there weren’t that many… 🤓

Well, I’ll be god damned. At least this article is about a current event… No comment from me…

There were many times that Sarah would sheepishly but casually inform me not to take any money out of the account until such and such a date. This usually occurred by forgetting about a purchase or that some biannual insurance had come due. For me, it meant foregoing lunch a time or two until one of us were paid. Thank goodness for credit cards.
