Brian Kelly's old team had a great night too, Notre Dame eliminated Clemson from the playoff chase. TCU fans were big Irish fans tonight and have to be happy. That was surely one of Dabbo Swinney's worst losses. Especially considering Notre Dame has lost to schools like Marshall and Stanford earlier in the year. I love what the Horned Frogs are doing. They should move into the top five at least, and they've beaten plenty of ranked teams, although no top-tier powerhouses. I like Sonny Dykes as a coach, just as I liked his father Spike Dykes at Texas Tech, mostly for his cool name. I remember they actually finished second in the polls after the 2010 season under Gary Patterson. Watch out for The Green Wave of Tulane. They're 8-1. It's good to see the downtrodden arise. The last winning head coach they had was Tommy Bowden, and he was only there two years (97-98) and went 18-4. To find a coach with a winning record who coached at least three years, you have to go back to a guy named Henry Frnka (no typo) who went 31-23-4 coaching from 1946 through 1951.

So happy for you. rizz. My Gators won yesterday, but aren't very good, so having Bama get beat is a great consolation prize. Now if somebody could beat Georgia. Georgia looks really tough. They dismantled Tennessee. That old man Bennett at QB is a smart one. Their remaining games are with Miss State, Kentucky and Georgia Tech, so some outside chance at an upset with those first two.

For sure congrats to your boys, Rizz. A good call to go for two in OT. Against a team like Alabama, I'd rather have it come down to one play for the win instead of cautiously trading punches and hope they make a mistake. This almost certainly eliminates the Tide from the playoffs. There will be too many teams with one or zero losses. Agreed. So many other coaches would have gone for one to tie at home at LSU and another overtime. The decision seemed to catch Saban and the Tide off guard. Alabama's defense appeared befuddled. And, Kelly said the play had not been seen before by Alabama, so it was perfectly timed and executed for just such an occasion. In the first game of the season against Florida State, Kelly elected to kick an extra point to tie the game. The kick was blocked and the game over, LSU losing by one. That may have been in the back of Kelly's mind as well. Eight lead changes - what a game!

Perhaps the main reason Kelly went for two and the win:
quote: Kelly was not pleased with the officiating. A specific rule few knew or understood overturned an LSU takeaway. There were questionable ball spots and a pass interference call near the end of regulation that LSU thought shouldn’t have stood because the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage.
quote: “There was no way that I was gonna let somebody else decide the outcome of this game,” Kelly told his players in the locker room. “We weren’t gonna come back into this locker room saying I wish we got this call or that call, because the only guys I trust are the guys in this locker room."

The Steelers won their first Super Bowl in Tulane Stadium against the Vikings, as the construction of the Superdome was not yet complete.

Kelly is still new to the SEC, but when you play Bama, sometimes you have to beat two teams.

As you would know better than I, the old "Sugar Bowl" was a classic old Art Deco stadium, replaced by the sterile soulless Louisiana Superdome. Fortunately I did get to attend a game there, the 1972 Sugar Bowl between Penn State and Oklahoma. Looking it up I found that Tulane Stadium at the end had a capacity of about 80,000, compared to the current Yulman Stadium at 30,000. Tulane Stadium expanded over the years as it accommodated first the Sugar Bowl and later the Saints, but even so it had a capacity of 35,000 when it opened in 1926.

Tulane Stadium is one of eight Super Bowl venues that have since been demolished. Hard to believe.

Yes, final and greatest capacity of Tulane Stadium was 80,985. The New Orleans Saints played there until the Superdome was completed, which always confused some, as the capacity of the Dome to this day has never exceed much over 76,000+ with people standing in the concourses. But, with all the rain, humidity, mosquitos, gnats, and other crawling and flying pests, it was nonetheless a novelty and one of the first of its kind. I prefer outside venues for sporting events.
