Sean Payton, where are you? Why did you leave me? What did I do to push you away?

What you smiling about maize? It's not about LSU, that's for certain. Actually, I had a feeling they were going to lose at College Station, and told my brother that I believed they were in for a let down, looking forward to Georgia in the SEC championship game. I admit I thought your boys had that one in the bag, if only because Texas A&M has underperformed all season. According to the bowl projections I am seeing, LSU is slated to face Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, which gets first crack after the New Year's Six have been determined. Of course things can change dramatically if either you beat Georgia or Purdue beats Michigan in the conference playoffs. I don't know why we need conference playoffs in today's world. Oh wait, I think it begins with the letter $ and ends with the letter $. My own Nittany Lions are projected to play Tulane in the Cotton Bowl, not something that has me tingling with anticipation, especially since NFL-bound players tend to sit out the bowl games. How sad. All year long I thought Georgia looked like the best team in college football, and they still may be, but both Michigan and USC are playing awfully well right now. TCU is a Wild Card, but I do not think they will embarrass themselves. There are so many bowl games right now that most likely some 5-7 teams are going to get bowl bids. "Only" 79 teams have the requisite six wins, but there are 82(!) bowl spots to fill, so depending on what happens in the few remaining regular season games and conference playoffs, they might need some losing teams in there. That's what happens when you're looking to fill space in the Cheez-It Bowl and the Fenway Bowl and the Cure Bowl and the Boca Raton Bowl and the Gasparilla Bowl. Those are all real bowl games this year. Even without the Poulan Weedeater Bowl and the Belk Bowl, there are still more than enough surreal bowl games out there. I wonder, if my school got an invitation to the Lending Tree Bowl, wouldn't it be worth turning down the pittance they would get just to keep that off the resume'? I do miss the old Bluebonnet Bowl. It lasted from 1959 through 1987, and was first played a few days before Christmas and later on New Year's Eve. The game had the SWC runner-up -- usually somebody like Houston or SMU or Baylor -- playing an at large team that wasn't good enough to get to one of the high-revenue bowls -- it seemed like Missouri or Oklahoma State or Colorado often performed this function. The game was kind of like comfort food, a modest diversion from whatever your real plans were for the day. Something you watched snatches of for the bizarre play or minor controversy. The Sun Bowl or Holiday Bowl or Liberty Bowl performed a similar service, but the Bluebonnet (called the Astro-Bluebonnet when played at the Astrodome rather than Rice Stadium) was my favorite of the bunch. Good old college football. As Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff (Groucho Marx) told the assembled faculty of Darwin College in "Horse Feathers," "We need to build a College that the football team can be proud of."

Good old college football. As Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff (Groucho Marx) told the assembled faculty of Darwin College in "Horse Feathers," "We need to build a College that the football team can be proud of." Texas A&M certainly underperformed this season, as they have talent, but I knew that the game against LSU would be the Aggies' Super Bowl. LSU has been looking forward to the SEC Championship since they defeated Alabama. And, playing on the road at College Station has not been kind to the Fighting Tigers. Even when they have won, it was a struggle with lots of home cooking from the officials. Also, LSU had only 39 scholarship players on the team this season, poor special teams, two freshman starters on the offensive line, an inconsistent quarterback who gets rattled against zone defense and doesn't trust his receivers like he should. Without the fumble from Daniels at QB, LSU may still have had a chance, but their defense was on the field too long. Daniels holds the ball too long, misses too many open receivers, and looks to run too soon. If you look at A&M's results this season, they lost a lot of close games and that gave me pause, as LSU has over performed this season. I agree the Bluebonnet Bowl should return to college football. What's one more bowl game?

SEC Championship Game today. This could get ugly. Hey Rizz, I'm watching it and it could easily be tied halfway through the second quarter. Georgia was incredibly lucky on the interception. The blocked FG was just bizarre as everybody took a nap.

On the field goal, even the Georgia coaches in the booth were yelling for their players not to touch the ball, until it was clear they would score. Not something you see frequently.

Georgia scores a TD early in the 4th to go up 48-23. Of course they just had to go for two to get to 50.

Amazing that number 3 TCU and number 4 USC would both lose in the conference championships. It would be interesting if Purdue beat Michigan, but that's a long shot. So USC is likely out of the playoffs and Ohio State will probably move in. Watch out for the Tulane Green Wave!

Those two plays (blocked field goal for a touchdown; interception off a helmet) in the first quarter sort of doomed any chance of an upset. They did move the ball, but that big defensive tackle was in the backfield as much as the running backs. I have to think Georgia's defense would not have been the same if the game was close, which may have had an effect of the surprising yardage.

I just read that Taysom Hill is the first NFL player with nine touchdowns (each) passing, receiving, and rushing. Can that be right?

Tampa is getting desperate for offense. He would have made a heck of a tight-end.
