I spent most of my life doing research in various areas related to politics. But the political discussion is so nasty these days I try to ignore it. Anything you dangle in the water is certain to get bitten off...

Tequila's & My Latest Heroes:
--12-04-18 BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO—SHE IS RIGHT!!!: thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/419719-15-year-old-activist-addresses-world-leaders-at-un-climate A teenage climate activist addressed world leaders at a United Nations conference in Poland this week, accusing them of “behaving like children” on climate change.
Greta Thunberg, a 15-year-old from Sweden, warned attendees of the conference in Katowice, Poland, that global warming is “an existential threat,” and spoke of the necessity of youth activism in environmental issues.
“For 25 years, countless people have come to the UN climate conferences begging our world leaders to stop emissions and clearly that has not worked as emissions are continuing to rise,” she said, according to The Guardian.
“So I will not beg the world leaders to care for our future. I will instead let them know change is coming, whether they like it or not,” she said.
Thunberg started a protest that has inspired more than 20,000 students globally to walk out of school to prompt lawmakers to take action on the climate.
“Since our leaders are behaving like children, we will have to take the responsibility they should have taken long ago,” Thunberg said at the conference. “We have to understand what the older generation has dealt to us, what mess they have created that we have to clean up and live with. We have to make our voices heard.”
Thunberg met with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to The Guardian.
The teen activist originally spent two weeks protesting outside Swedish Parliament instead of going to school, and now does so every Friday, vowing to stop when the country reduces its carbon emissions by 15 percent annually.
“Why should we be studying for a future that soon may be no more? This is more important than school, I think,” she told the conference.
Representatives of nearly 200 nations are attending the conference in Poland for two weeks of talks on climate change and hammering out concrete action to implement the Paris accord, which President Trump pulled out of last year.
The conference comes weeks after the U.N. released a dire report on the impending consequences of global warming.
12-28-18 BRAVO!!!: us.cnn.com/2018/05/11/health/james-harrison-blood-donor-retires-trnd/index.html (CNN) — Most people, when they retire, get a gold watch. James Harrison deserves so much more than that.
Harrison, known as the "Man With the Golden Arm," has donated blood nearly every week for 60 years. After all those donations, the 81-year-old Australian man "retired" Friday. The occasion marked the end of a monumental chapter.
According to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, he has helped saved the lives of more than 2.4 million Australian babies.
First, a note about antibodies Harrison's blood has unique, disease-fighting antibodies that have been used to develop an injection called Anti-D, which helps fight against rhesus disease.
This disease is a condition where a pregnant woman's blood actually starts attacking her unborn baby's blood cells. In the worst cases, it can result in brain damage, or death, for the babies.
Here's why: The condition develops when a pregnant woman has rhesus-negative blood (RhD negative) and the baby in her womb has rhesus-positive blood (RhD positive), inherited from its father.
If the mother has been sensitized to rhesus-positive blood, usually during a previous pregnancy with an rhesus-positive baby, she may produce antibodies that destroy the baby's "foreign" blood cells. That could be deadly for the baby.
Harrison's remarkable gift of giving started when he had major chest surgery when he was just 14, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service said.
Blood donations saved his life, so he pledged to become a blood donor.
A few years later, doctors discovered his blood contained the antibody which could be used to create Anti-D injections, so he switched over to making blood plasma donations to help as many people as possible.
Doctors aren't exactly sure why Harrison has this rare blood type, but they think it might be from the transfusions he received when he was 14, after his surgery. He's one of no more than 50 people in Australia known to have the antibodies, the blood service says.
"Every bag of blood is precious, but James' blood is particularly extraordinary. His blood is actually used to make a life-saving medication, given to moms whose blood is at risk of attacking their unborn babies. Every batch of Anti-D that has ever been made in Australia has come from James' blood." Falkenmire said. "And more than 17% of women in Australia are at risk, so James has helped save a lot of lives."
Why his donations were a game changer
Anti-D, produced with Harrison's antibodies, prevents women with rhesus-negative blood from developing RhD antibodies during pregnancy. More than three million does of Anti-D have been issued to Australian mothers with negative blood types since 1967.
Even Harrison's own daughter was given the Anti-D vaccine.
"That resulted in my second grandson being born healthy," Harrison said. "And that makes you feel good yourself that you saved a life there, and you saved many more and that's great.
The discovery of Harrison's antibodies was an absolute game changer, Australian officials said.
"In Australia, up until about 1967, there were literally thousands of babies dying each year, doctors didn't know why, and it was awful.
Women were having numerous miscarriages and babies were being born with brain damage," Jemma Falkenmire, of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, told CNN in 2015. "Australia was one of the first countries to discover a blood donor with this antibody, so it was quite revolutionary at the time."
Why he's a national hero That would be more than two million lives, according to the blood service, and for that Harrison is considered a national hero in Australia. He's won numerous awards for his generosity, including the Medal of the Order of Australia, one of the country's most prestigious honors.
"It becomes quite humbling when they say, 'oh you've done this or you've done that or you're a hero,'" Harrison said. "It's something I can do. It's one of my talents, probably my only talent, is that I can be a blood donor."
Now that Harrison has given his last blood donation (in Australia you can't donate blood past the age of 81), Falkenmire and others hope people with similar antibodies in their blood will step up and donate.
"All we can do is hope there will be people out there generous enough to do it, and selflessly in the way he's done," she said.
--01-08-19 BRAVO!!!: www.msn.com/en-us/news/good-news/a-swiss-philanthropist-has-donated-dollar1-billion-to-save-the-earths-wild-lands-and-waters-from-destruction-heres-where-the-money-is-going/ar-BBRWzUI?li=BBnbfcL&ocid=U147DHP Hansjörg Wyss, a Swiss philanthropist, has pledged $1 billion to land and ocean conservation.
The Wyss Foundation wants to help preserve 30% of the planet's wild lands and oceans by 2030. An increase in conservation can help prevent animal and plant species from going extinct, and it can expand the availability of clean air and drinking water.
Greg Zimmerman, the communications director at the Wyss Campaign for Nature, said the foundation has already donated more than $66 million.
In October 2018, Swiss philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss announced a $1 billion donation to conserve the planet's oceans and lands.
Wyss, a billionaire and conservationist, wrote in a New York Times op-ed that his eponymous foundation will donate the money over the next 10 years to conservation projects led by indigenous people, local leaders, and conservation groups.
He wants to help conserve 30% of the planet by 2030, adding that lands and waters are best protected when they are turned into public national parks, marine reserves, and wildlife refuges.
Such a large increase in conservation would widen the availability of clean air and drinking water, and prevent the extinction of many species.
Researchers at Brown University have found that animal and plant species are going extinct 1,000 times faster than they did prior to human activity.
--12-22-18 BRAVO: www.msn.com/en-us/money/smallbusiness/this-family-owned-business-surprised-employees-with-dollar4-million-in-bonuses-just-in-time-for-christmas/ar-BBRbKEW?li=BBnb7Kz The employees of one family-owned Michigan company are going to have a very merry Christmas this year: Michigan-based FloraCraft is gifting nearly $4 million in holiday bonuses to its 200 employees just in time for the holidays.
FloraCraft — headquartered in Ludington — is a leading manufacturer of foam products for the craft and floral industries, with products sold at retailers like Walmart, Amazon, Michaels, Joann and Hobby Lobby. The company, which was founded in 1946, employs roughly 200 people.
The idea for the generous gift came from owner and chairman Lee Schoenherr, who has run the company since 1973. The surprise was announced on Dec. 14 at the company's holiday luncheon, in which employees applauded (some even shedding a few tears) in response to the news.
"This is something [Lee's] been wanting to do for many years," Eric Erwin, president and CEO of FloraCraft, tells CNBC Make It . "In February, he told the board, 'you know, I really think this is the year we've got to figure out how to do this.' We spent a better part of the year making sure we had the right program in place."
Each gift will be based on longevity of service, the company says, and will be shared to full-time team members as a cash bonus and a gift to the employee's 401(k) account.
While the amounts of the gifts will vary, the average bonus will be about $20,000 per worker, the Detroit Free Press reports, with the first installment made by the end of 2019. A second cash bonus and special bonus to 401(k) accounts will be gifted by the end of March 2020. For employees who have worked at the company for over 40 years, gifts will top $60,000. READ MORE…
--12-27-18 BRAVO TO THIS BRAVE POLICE OFFICER: www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/nypd-officer-praised-using-non-lethal-force-fend-5-men-n952006 A New York City police officer is receiving praise for using nonlethal force to fend off five menacing, visibly drunk men on a subway platform, according to authorities and video of the incident.
A video of the confrontation Sunday taped by a bystander and posted on social media shows Officer Syed Ali shouting repeatedly: "Stand back.
I don't want to hurt you," as the men approached him in unison. The officer brandished his baton, but does not appear to have reached for his service revolver.
His apparent de-escalation of the incident came as some critics of police around the country are urging greater use of nonlethal tactics when possible.
"Officer Ali showed restraint & discipline in how he de-escalated the situation," New York City Councilman Chaim Deutsch, who sits on the council's transportation committee, tweeted.
He showed "quick action to defend civilians and himself against five individuals attacking on a subway platform."
Ali's union also praised the "courageous" officer and said the incident could have had a much different, tragic outcome.
“There’s is no telling how much damage these mopes would have done to that courageous police officer had he not been equipped to handle them," Patrick Lynch, president of the city Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said in a statement. "Had it gone the other way we might have had a seriously injured or dead police officer."
The confrontation began when a woman reported at 10:30 p.m. ET Sunday that she was being sexually harassed by a group of men as she waited for an F train on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, police said.
After Ali, on a solo foot patrol, told the five men to leave the station, they became combative and ganged up on him, police said.
Ali kicked at least two of the men as they approached him, the video showed. One of the men stumbled into the tracks during the confrontation before Ali radioed for power to be cut from the tracks to keep away any trains that might hit the man, police said.
Other first responders arrived to rescue the man on the tracks and to take his four cohorts into custody, police said.
The next day, the five men were found at the same station and ticketed for loitering, authorities said.
--12-19-18 BRAVO!!!: www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/tucker-carlson-dropped-by-at-least-16-advertisers-over-immigration-comments/ar-BBR8xgj?li=BBnbfcL At least 16 advertisers have now dropped "Tucker Carlson Tonight" after the Fox News host said in a show last Thursday that immigrants to the United States made the country "poorer" and "dirtier."
As of Tuesday morning, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, TD Ameritrade, Just For Men, United Explorer credit card, ScotteVest, Voya Financial, Zenni Optical, Pacific Life, Indeed, Bowflex, SmileDirectClub, NerdWallet, Minted, Ancestry.com, and IHOP Jaguar had all told TheWrap they plan to suspend advertising on the program.
On Tuesday a spokesman for Takeda Pharmaceutical Company told TheWrap in a statement: "We have pulled our advertising off of Tucker Carlson's show."
On Monday, Carlson addressed the growing boycott campaign against his sponsors over his on-air remarks about immigration, telling viewers that he would not be intimidated.
"You've seen it a million times, it happens all the time," he said. "The enforcers scream 'racist' on Twitter, until everyone gets intimidated and changes the subject to the Russia investigation or some other distraction.
It's a tactic, a well-worn one. And it won't work with the show, we're not intimidated. We plan to say what's true until the last day."
The pressure, however, has only grown with each defection, as liberal pressure groups like Media Matters for America and Sleeping Giants have kept up the pressure on Twitter.
Activists like Jordan Uhl and Judd Legum posted real-time updates to their massive followings of companies whose ads appeared on Monday night's show.
"We cannot and will not allow voices like Tucker Carlson to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts from the likes of Moveon.org, Media Matters and Sleeping Giants," a spokesperson for Fox News told TheWrap in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "
Attempts were made last month to bully and terrorize Tucker and his family at their home. He is now once again being threatened via Twitter by far left activist groups with deeply political motives.
The statement continued: "While we do not advocate boycotts, these same groups never target other broadcasters and operate under a grossly hypocritical double standard given their intolerance to all opposing points of view." READ MORE…

All-in-all it’s just a brick in the wall...
Any time I hear that the government we’re all paying for has been shut down, partially or otherwise, I’m rightfully displeased with that news.
Hearing both sides posturing and finger pointing doesn’t make me angry at any one individual, but it certainly makes me angry at the entire clan, regardless of party affiliation or position.
There is a legitimate concern that immigration must be properly moderated and controlled. History shows no evidence that a wall will stop illegal immigration. The mongols invaded despite the Great Wall Of China. East Germans surely circumvented the Berlin Wall and The Iron Curtain was of little detriment.
Will a wall or fence work on the border with Mexico? Like any of the past attempts to wall undesirables out, it will slow illegal immigration to some degree. More than that however it will stand as a negatively regarded symbol to the world. Sadly, there are already so many tunnels in place at the border that have illegal entry ports that we can’t monitor that the leak is palpable before the wall is built.
On the other hand...American culture shows us many gated communities. Fenced and walled individual properties are prevalent for many reasons in this country already. We somehow stopped being a country where there were a couple of crazy old men in every town that would holler when the ball went into their yard to a country where those yards are now fenced off and Ring Doorbells tell when anyone dares to approach. I agree with Donald Trump that (most likely) almost every property owned and utilized by members of our congress are so afraid of being robbed or invaded are among those walled properties that they are making a statement about the need for walls and fences in today’s society.
The wall represents more than it’s sum total. It can be one of several methods to assist in the flow of illegal immigration. It will never be a solution to any problem. I can be a portion of the solution. We need more and better trained border agents, and more agents enabled to apprehend the people that have gotten through the strainers at ALL borders.
Most of all, more than anything, we need the compassion to find a way to accomplish what needs to be done while still allowing those in that are suffering and mean no harm to anyone. Those that want to work for a better life and are suffering. I once worked for a Vietnamese family for a short period of time, only 14 weeks. Her parents had immigrated through entry on the west coast as refugees of war during the Vietnam Conflict. The horrors they had seen were unspeakable. They were hard-working people that had earned college degrees (the generation I worked for, not the parents). How sad if we had not allowed that family into the country.
I can take or leave the wall or fence. I doubt it’s effectiveness but I also doubt I have enough knowledge to make that choice and wish my leadership in congress could make that decision in a non-partisan intelligent way. But they can’t. But they do need to reopen the government while they get the matter settled...

Well said, inger. The vast, vast mojority of bad actors entering the country don’t come through the land barriers, but through airports and sea lanes. Better technology is available and more effective than any medieval wall to stop the assholes trying to get through the land borders. Trump is appealing to the lowest common denominator in stoking fears and at the same time making sure his ever dwindling base doesn’t desert him despite his bizarre behavior and subsequent actions. Even Fox News fact checked his lies and misrepresentations following his little speech last night. Great job, Shepard Smith.

CHUCK & INGER: Great recent POSTS!!!
Believe it or not we are fixing OUR WALL. On December 17th I was doing my thing on my Computer, when suddenly I heard a massive explosion type sound and the entire house rattled.
As I ran downstairs, Tequila was screaming: "Oh Shit, Oh Shit..."
I ran outside where one of my workers were and he said in broken English: "Major Problem"
I ran (well, walked really fast...) to the outside of my compound and there to my surprise (shock); was a Pick-Up Truck that had driven off the road into/thru my outside wall...going thru the wall into the area where we had two large propane water heaters and just ten feet away from our 5,000 pound propane tank.
The driver was trapped in the cabin of the truck; propane was flowing from broken water heater lines and it was like a waterfall on the inside of my wall. By now there at least 20 people gather within 20-feet of this accident.
The driver was still trying to RESTART the engine while pumping the gas pedal and flooding the engine; one could smell the gasoline...
I knew that if the truck caught fire, 20 plus people including myself, my workers and my pets would be blown to Kingdom Come.
So I scream to my workers to turn off the propane tank and shutdown our water system; at the same time I was screaming at the driver to STOP trying to restart his truck. Finally, when the driver wouldn't stop retrying, I reached inside the partially open driver's window and dragged him out of the truck.
Thank GOD; the Propane Tank didn't blow-up!!!
It took the Fire Dept., Police & Ambulance around 20-minutes to get there and ALL of them are located with-in 5 blocks of us. Go figure.
Apparently the Driver was NOT supposed to be driving due to his medical conditions. He had a medical event/attack, passed out-jammed his foot to the gas pedal and drove off the street into/thru my Wall.
NO, in Nowhere, Baja anyone over 18-years old can get a drivers license = No Written Test; No Driver's Test, NO NOTHING = NO DMV.
He had been warned by Police never to Drive again, but took his Father-In-Law's Truck without permission.
Finally, I got workers here yesterday (after 22-days) to start fixing the Wall. Tomorrow, they will start to re-enforce the Wall surrounding the Propane Tank Area with Steel Bars.
SO would one of YOU; PLEASE inform Donald, that Do Me is Repairing the WALL; at no cost to U.S. Taxpayers...

You need a wall? What for? 👹... Good Question. The Answer is:
"To Keep CRAZY White Americans OUT!!!"
The wall mentality is growing in America. At least I think it is. Maybe it’s always been there. I see a lot of gated communities and homes with gates or walls. The question is, are we keeping something in, or something out? People use fences to protect their animals and even children from wandering too far. They also do so to keep thieves out. Heck, about a half hour ago I had a guy come charging out of his house to accuse me of trying to open his door when he didn’t answer it. (What I actually did was stick a business card in his door). Taking his side, what I’d say... he was in the bathroom when I knocked? His wife or children may have been fearful of opening the door. Then they heard my card being pushed in the rubber insulation around the area of the deadbolt and were frightened by the sound. It’s a nasty world out there. We live with a natural flight or fight instinct like all other creatures do. Like other creatures, we determine through some rule or law what is ours and we greedily set boundaries to protect it. I suppose Donald and many others suffer from that same instinctual desire to protect. Sometimes we overreact, sometimes it’s a good thing we react. Sometimes there is a better solution than the instinctual response, but response is instantaneous. There has been plenty of time for rational people to come up with a solution to our border concerns. Several hundred people in our government have let the cat out of the bag. Now they look like idiots trying to get it back in...We suffer for the idiocy...

Below is the CURRENT TV News Type Shows; Movies; TV Series etc. that I currently watch.
Thank God, for the INVENTION of the Clicker; because at times I am able to watch 3-4 shows at once (breaks for ads).
Every morning I go to the menus on my two Satellite Dishes and write down on a large index card all the shows I want to watch for that day/night.
There are times I cannot watch all of them; but most have re-runs later in the week.
I have a TV in my bedroom (seldom used); one in my Office so while I am on the Computer reading/researching I able to also watch my Picked TV shows too.
And, I have one TV in the my small Living Room.
During the day, while I am in my office,Tequila NOW watches the various news channels in the Living Room…until she is fed-up with the news and then says: “Cartoons Please”.
At night, I watch the rest of my shows in the Living Room while eating dinner.
I am mostly in bed by 9:00 PM and can be up as early as 1:00 to 2:00 AM to watch the days Global Markets…than maybe back to bed until 5:00 AM and then up watching latest news/biz news on BBC, CNBC & Bloomberg, etc.
On weekends while most (not all) are watching the NFL/MLB etc. I am watching shows where I LEARN something NEW = For Knowledge Is POWER.
I can later get all the NFL/MLB, etc. results by watching the Highlights of the day’s sports (a 30-minute event; vs. a 4-hour ordeal).

Read on MarketWatch this morning that the major US indices are having their best start to a new year (through yesterday) since 2006. A good bounce back after a very rough December. After basically being flat for two years in 2004-2005, the DOW gained over 16% in 2006 before a slowdown in 2007 and then the meltdown in 2008. This is far from an exact parallel, not even close in fact, but always interesting to compare.
I am still of the thinking that the equity markets and the "Real economy" are somewhat decoupled right now (as can be seen from the strong jobs/economic data from my prior posts) and the fact that the market seems to be more at the mercy of the Fed (which makes sense since their post-crisis policy (which was largely just doubling down on shitty pre-crisis policy) is largely the source of the inflated asset bubble).

Hope you are correct, mich. it doesn’t make sense that employment and wages (outside of fed government jobs) are going one way while the market heads the other. A lot of the volatility in the market also eminates from unseasoned investors who lack timing and patience, pretty much in that order. At least that the way it seems to a novice like me.

Its an interesting contrast with the Obama/QE years where the market was roaring following the recession yet we were primarily creating shitty low paying jobs and experiencing low growth. Then 2018 was a bad year for the equity market and we had a great year for more productive jobs, rising wages, and better growth. We are getting close to the end of the cycle, is just the reality. That was going to be the case regardless of the political landscape. When the Fed spikes the punch bowl by leaving rates artificially at zero and pumps trillions of liquidity into the market for years that inflates a bubble. In the boom/bust cycle, everyone concerns themselves with the bust ("what caused the bust?!?!?") but the real question is what caused the boom. Was it organic or artificial/manipulated?

A lot of people were panicking and cashing in their investments, which is a shame, but it also created a lot of good opportunities to buy, if you had some extra cash sitting around.
