I doubt that my greatest wish for Gardner becomes a reality, but if I had my way he would be re-signed but with the understanding that the team is projecting him as the fourth OF. We need a new starting LF that has both the range to handle the position and the power to justify holding a corner position. My suggestion would be that Hicks moves to LF, with a new CF supplanting him. This new CF could then be a speedy player that is a legit full time ball hawk, and hopefully can swipe some bases with a decent bat. I'm also not opposed to Judge and Stanton at the two corners and leaving Hicks in CF for another year or two. At 29 next season the wheels should last another couple of years before we must make that move...I do like Stanton at DH. After all, he's stayed healthy this season, which is an accomplishment in itself. So, get us an OF. A left fielder with a big bat and good wheels, or a new CF and let Hicks be that LF. Harper? No thanks. We can get three good players for what he'll cost. It's too much...and there's only so much room for egos in the clubhouse...
We need three starting pitchers. Severino, Tanaka, and +three. Whether or not Loaisiga is one of those, or German is yet to be seen...So, I would love to see us sign two starters and continue to stockpile the bullpen...Though they've been good relievers for a long time there are some members of the current pen that are entering their questionable years and may need to be put in lesser roles or dealt away. You know their names...

I think adding another big money free agent would be a mistake and eventually get them right back where they were when the Rodriguez contract and others were weighing down the roster and payroll. We have a young talented team that eventually is also going to have to be paid. Guys like Machado and Harper could be a nice one or two year benefit but eventually will end the way other big contracts have ended, dead money standing in the way of payroll and roster flexibility. I hope Cash stays the course. GF, in general I lean in your direction on this, having been scarred enough by the A-Rod deal which I never wanted anyway (and especially not the insane 10 year extension going into his age 32 season.). Assuming that Machado and Harper will be looking at at least a 10 year contract, they are several years younger than A-Rod was when the Yanks first signed him. I am reluctant to go after either one, but if Harper is willing to make the move to first base -- and he does have the requisite lefty swing -- I would not scream bloody murder if they got him. Nor would I if they signed Machado, but surely not both of them. I know it is apples and oranges for their positions, but I was surprised at how much better Harper's career OBP (.386) and OPS+ (139) were than Machado's (.336 and 121 respectively.) Basically Andujar, albeit with only one year to go by, has those numbers (.337 and 128), although of course Manny is light years better defensively. I have affection for Andujar because I have liked effective bad ball hitters since the days of Berra and Clemente. Like knuckleball pitchers, quirky entertainment. Looking at the free agent list for starting pitchers, which the Yanks need more than anything, among guys who might realistically hit the market -- which almost certainly eliminates Sale, Kershaw and Bumgarner -- the pickings aren't all that great. Mostly too old or too beat up. Keuchel would be attractive, but I doubt he would be willing to shave his beard. Corbin maybe? But he seems to miss a lot of time, which of course you could say about practically any starting pitcher in the pitch count era. The list of relief pitchers gives me a headache, I can't go there.
