Yes, I was in a pissy mood when I posted that and probably should have stayed away from the thread when I was in that mood. I deserve to be chastised a bit for that. Those were some inner thoughts that were probably better off being filtered before being spat out, but there are times that my filter does perform it's job very well... That happens to me A LOT! LOL! Hey inger- I got some sleep this morning... a good 7 hours. Yesterday was a shit show... today is much better.

I guess I am the lucky one, since I have avoided seeing the "incident" thus far....players shouting at umpires...managers/coaches shouting at umpires.....about the only sport I have not seen that is curling...…... During the Last Winter Games, I became HOOKED on Curling...looks easy, but if is very difficult. I bet you would like playing shuffleboard....much the same techniques and strategy...I winter in Arizona, and we are invaded Dec-March with Canadians....they are by far the best shuffleboard players...…among these, the best are those that have been on curling teams......

Not uncharacteristic of Serena to become somewhat of a whiner when she's in trouble on the court. Her sister Venus has always carried herself with much more grace and sportsmanship.
The incident: Warning given for coaching during the match, which though illegal does happen occasionally. Such warnings point to the coach rather than the player. Serena, behind in the match and frustrated by a player who had beaten her twice and generates just as much power, broke her racquet - receiving another warning for racquet abuse. Serena then began the tirade toward the umpire, demanding an apology, etc. The umpire then penalizes Serena, taking away a point. Serena then calls the umpire a thief and it continued. Is there a double standard by which men get away with more on the court? Possibly, but that's like strike zones in baseball...depends on which umpire is calling the game. Navratilova was correct that it was the wrong place and time to press the issue of a systematic double standard.

Not being real up on the history. I am aware that at one time the sisters were quite a power duo in the sport. Which one has had the more impressive caree? Did they both have their time in the sun, so to speak? I always thought Venus was a really interesting name...

[ I’d also have to think that certain words, acts, gestures, etc. are more or less “magic words” that are going to trigger tempers in nearly anyone. Few people, I would assume even thieves, like to be called thieves...thieves. So, when you bait someone, they respond in kind, right? Perhaps two things should happen. Perhaps men’s tennis should get up to standards with the women’s sport and clean up the nastiness by the players. Perhaps there should be a demonstrative act by the league as well to assure this doesn’t happen again in either league. Abuse of officials is no more correct than poor officiating... I would also assume that different umpires

I have too beautiful biracial nieces on Ruthie’s side that I love dearly named Destiny and Serenity...They’re seven and eight years old, and were only born some 11 months apart. I get their names confused because I don’t get to see them often. To make matters more confusing, the younger girl is now taller than the older one. Many people think they’re twins!
Serena may not be as Serene as her name may suggest. I’m at the point now where I’m beginning to feel badly for her because comments are indicating that this is a situation that she’s been upset about for a long time. While she may have expressed her concern, she must have reached a point of horrible frustration that in her eyes nothing has been done about it.
We’ve all boiled over about a nagging issue from time to time. No one wants to be seen that way in public, nor even behave that way privately.
I still feel she should be disciplined by the ruling council if her sport. If a three-year old acts that way in the toy store, you don’t buy them the toy...

I believe what she is after is consistency. Nadal, Djokovic, Roddick and BJ King have all stated that coaching from the stands is a normal occurrence in the game and rarely if ever do officials call them on it. They should. If not, then the rule should be dropped, plain and simple. Andy Murray for example, shamelessly flouts the rule nearly every match with no consequence. His on court behavior includes screaming, crying, racket abuse, berating both his entourage section , fans, referees, opponents, and various birds gliding by that happen to interfere with his line of vision during his ball toss prior to his serves. He bites his shirt, racket handle and his wrist bands like an overgrown termite, and oh yeah, receives instructions from his coach flavour of the month with regard to positioning, racket grip and which type of serve he needs to employ on the fly. He is one of the least liked players on the court, but off the court is said to be an ok dude except for being ruled by his ever present Mother and foul mouthed wife, who also has made a spectacle of herself cursing at poor Andy, officials and opponents from her gilded perch in the stands. That’s one guy. There are others. Many others. Serena’s behavior was as bad as Murray’s last week and deserved sanctioning in my amateur opinion. The rub was/is, that why is she made an example of while others skate? Why are the ones who get away with it invariably men? Rafa Nadal is one of the gentlemen of the game. A role model. Rafa said, without naming names that Serena was unfairly penalised given the widespread use of coaching from the stands that exists in the game. He did not excuse the point taken away for racket abuse, nor did anyone that I read. He never disputed that her tirade were unprofessional. Anyone with eyes and ears would come to the same conclusion. What wasn’t fair was that the rule regarding coaching was arbitrarily enforced upon her when she knew full well everyone does it. Every player, knowledgeable fan and official also knows it. The referee was put in a position where his morality was questioned and he reacted as most humans would. He is employed to be above that, but his ego tripped him up. Regrettable and entirely understandable, but given the sensitivities of the complicated times we live in, his decision underwhelmed under intense pressure.

The no coaching rule is odd when you think about it. Coaching is just reminders about things to do. The athlete still has to perform. In MLB, the pitching coach can call time and go the mound to help a student. In football coaching is constant. It's made even more bizarre when you realize that the speed of the sport of tennis may even make coaching a bit of a distraction for the player. It simply seems to be an ill-conceived rule to begin with to me...Although, once established should be obeyed and enforced consistently...

I'm sure it goes back to Old England and some rowdy action from spectators "coaching" players that caused a disturbance and generated a rule.... Strangely enough, as I wrote this I was reminded that billiard matches are the same way...there is no coaching allowed once the match starts...that also traces to the origons of the sport, I suppose..
