I'm confused, why would Sevy get the Wild Card start over Happ or Tanaka? I think it should be Tanaka unless there’s some split/matchup thing that clearly favors Happ. When he’s on Tanaka can be dominant and he won’t panic or shrink in the moment. I would let him start the WC and have Happ in game 1 of the ALDS if we get there. If that motivates Severino to be on his game when he does get the ball, terrific. Tanaka and Happ know how to do this.

Nice to win those 2. 97-60 2 up (3 with tie) 5 games left. This team has exceeded my expectations by quite a bit.

Seriously, though, I thought they had a championship team at the start of the season, but given that Bird and Sanchez have both hit solidly under .200, Gardner hitting about .190 since the All-Star break, Judge out for 6-7 weeks, Stanton with several deep and prolonged slumps, starting pitching questionable at best with one of the starters lost for the season early on and Sonny Gray totally crapping the bed all season, they have done remarkably well in my opinion. Given the above, I would not have expected them to threaten 100 wins.

Seriously though I didn’t think all the kids who excelled lasts year would keep it up. And some of them didn’t but apart from the injury Judge did and he’s the most important player on the team. And for a half anyway Severino not only kept it up but seemed to improve, before the wheels fell off. Plus the contributions from Gleyber and Andujar have been way beyond reasonable expectations. It is easy to lose sight of how great they’ve been given that the play down the stretch has been inconsistent and injuries have played such a factor, and the Sox just don’t lose. Overall, a really great season and a fun team to root for.

Did you not expect them to contend for the division? (which in a normal year where the Sox werent on historic pace, they would have)

Did you not expect them to contend for the division? (which in a normal year where the Sox werent on historic pace, they would have) [ I thought they would contend but think I had them at like 85-88 wins or so, competing for the WC. I think it was optimistic to think Judge, Sanchez, Severino wouldn’t have a sophomore slump of some kind. I didn’t expect Gleyber and Andujar to contribute to the extent they did. Seemed reasonable that Masa and CC could show their age. And I wasn’t sold on hiring a manager who had never done it before. So for me the team really exceeded expectations.
