Damn, horrible break for great player and teammate. I hope 2019 isn't a lost season for him.

I think if they weren’t planning to do it already this isn’t a good reason to do it. If they were thinking about it (and perhaps flipping Andujar for pitching) then this probably makes that a more attractive decision than it was before.

Wow, sad news. I love Didi both for his onfield play and his offield personality. That being said I wouldn't mind signing Machado now if the price isn't too exorbitant. I don't think you can count on Didi coming back and being in good form for 2019.

I’m sort of thinking that a Machado signing is in the cards anyway. This might seal it. TJ to a position player still entails 6-9 months on the shelf and then the rehab process, so if he’s back and productive by late July or so it would necessitate someone at SS for about 100 games. I don’t think Torres is a realistic replacement for that amount of time. Manny could play short, Miggy stay at third and when Didi returns, slide MM to third. Miggy could DH, maybe play some left or be used as a trade chip at the deadline. This just one scenario.

I think that is a realistic scenario, although of course we don't know how crazy the bidding for Machado will be. If the Yankees plan to contend in 2019 -- and I am 100 percent sure that they do -- they can't have a gaping hole in the middle infield for two-thirds of the season. Torres to short and say Tyler Wade at second just won't cut it. If the Yanks don't sign Machado and move Torres to short, here are the main FA second basemen available (with age and WAR last season). Jed Lowrie 35/4.9. Asdrubal Cabrera 33/2.7. Ian Kinsler 37/2.3. DJ LeMahieu 30/2.0. Brian Dozier 32/0.8. Daniel Murphy 34/0.8. Free agent shortstops: Machado 26/6.2. Jose Iglesias 29/2.5. Elvis Andrus 30/1.2. Freddy Galvis 29/1.2. Jordy Mercer 32/1.0. Neil Walker and Adeiny Hechevarria are also free agents in the unlikely event the Yanks want to bring them back. Short of signing Machado, there is no middle IF pairing the Yanks could have, at least via free agency, that isn't a drop-off from Torres and Didi. It's a big gap between Machado and the rest of the FA shortstops. It's even a fairly big decline from Lowrie to the rest of the second basemen. But he's a bit long in the tooth. Out of that gang, LeMahieu may be the best bet. But there is no way to make it a happy situation. With free agency pending for Didi after 2019, it makes moving him that much more difficult. Of course there are always trades. I hear from a pretty solid source that Sonny Gray is available.

The only thing worse would have been if we lost Judge...SS was one of the positions that felt so secure, so well cared for in 2019...
Trade Andujar, Move Torres to third with intention of an eventual move to SS. Sign Machado to play SS with an eventual move to 3rd. Trade for Whit Merrifield to play second base.
See? No panic in any of that... (:
Deal with Didi’s return when it happens...

I think if the Yankees believe his prognosis for recovery is good, I would talk extension with him now. The injury creates the possibility of getting him to stay below market. He’s a great part of this team in all respects. Machado is a better hitter, I’m not sure adding machado and losing Didi actually improves the team long term though.

Yes, that thought had crossed my mind as well. Right now the Yanks could get the best extension terms they will ever get. I would love to have Didi long-term if at all reasonably possible.
