Corbin could be top offseason target for Yanks
The Yankees are two days removed from the playoffs, but the rumor mill is already churning for the 2019 season. New York is expected to target left-hander Patrick Corbin in free agency this winter, according to MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman.
Corbin, 29, is coming off a career year with the D-backs. He made the National League All-Star team for the second time in his career -- and first since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014 -- and set career-best marks with a 3.15 ERA, a 1.050 WHIP and 246 strikeouts in 33 starts.
The D-backs are expected to extend a one-year, $17.9 million qualifying offer to Corbin, which means it will cost the team that signs him a Draft pick.
Corbin grew up in upstate New York and has expressed interest in playing for the Yankees. He'll be one of the top pitchers to hit the open market this offseason, and the Yankees are looking to shore up a rotation that ranked among the middle of the pack with a 4.05 starters ERA in 2018.

Some things to like here and some things to be scared of. What I like is a pitcher who thinks enough about what he's doing to have very different approaches at first pitch, ahead in the count and behind in the count. What concerns me is that a pitcher who spends this much time outside the strike zone is likely to have more success in the NL West than the AL East. What scares me is a guy who's already had TJ surgery having a 2-3 mph drop in fastball velocity during the season down to the low 90s. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/patrick-corbin-got-better-then-worse-then-better/

Maybe the best way to get a difference maker is via the trade route.

Unless they have dominate stuff. I just don't trust pitchers that have spent so much time in the National League. I get Corbin is lefthanded and would make sense at Yankee Stadium, but we know pitching in the AL East is a different animal. Fatness bringing up the velocity issue is another concern to think about.

While Corbin’s season makes him intriguing I’m not sold on him doing it again. He wouldn’t be the first pitcher to post a monster season and then slip into baseball oblivion...And he was definitely better in the first half of 2018 than the second half...

I stand corrected. He slumped a bit from May through July. Not horribly, but noticeably worse than his March/April start. Then he rebounded quite well in August through the end of the season. I would agree that the expectation should be that he’ll be a better than average pitcher rather than an ace. The problem is that he’s wisely going to want to squeeze someone for a big payday with long terms. But, what’s new there???

Corbin is a guy I just dont trust coming over to the American League. I’d expect an ERA between 3.75 and 4.25. That’s anywhere between average to a bit better than average. What was the cause of his increased K rate last season? I would assume he had a new pitch?... I think I read this earlier, but have forgotten...

Just read that he upped his use of sliders to 40%. That’s a lot...

Corbin is a guy I just dont trust coming over to the American League. I agree. When you look at what his stuff is and how he’s achieved his success, which can’t be denied, I don’t think it translates well to how pitchers and hitters succeed in the AL East. I thought the Fangraphs article had some great analysis of what he’s done to be successful. I’d pass.

We have to have a better rotation and Montgomery probably won’t be fully functional until 2020. I’m thinking they’ll go after Corbin, especially since he’s a lefty.

Tequila & I have Corbin on our List as a MUST SIGN. You mean you would sign Corbin, a retread...instead of using a PROSPECT??? Church of Dome blasphemy...

I doubt Cashman will get a pitcher through free agency.
