I have to admit that the name Ryan Ruocco did not register with me at all. I must have missed whatever games he was calling.
The fact that the Yankees keep the laughingstocks Sterling and Waldman as their radio announcers shows what a low opinion they have of their fans. If you are in a position where radio is your only option for listening to the game -- for me it is when I am in the car during a game -- I will if at all possible tune into the away broadcast. My guess is that radio ratings are pretty much the same whether it is Mel Allen and Red Barber calling the game or a couple of mynah birds or, worse still, John and Suzyn. If you want to hear the game and radio is your only choice, you will listen.
Whatever complaints I have about the TV crew -- and for the most part I have no major issues with them -- they are light years better than the radio clowns the Yankees inflict on us.

The irony is of course that if you’re watching on TV and don’t care for the announcers you can turn the sound down, but on radio...at least with John and Suzan you don’t SEE them...
I’ve almost never heard those two, but with the criticism they get on this site, and the little bit I’ve seen and heard, I have to wonder if they’re enjoyed by the typical New York resident in a sort of traditionalist way that I can’t grasp?...
“Oh, Jawn. Did you mean that”?... “That was a Screw-Lo-Witzki by Tulowitzki”

People who hate the Yankees take pleasure in this humiliation. Sterling is in his eighties, and he is not improving with age. Waldman is clueless, but at least her role is limited mostly to marveling at John's wisdom and saying things like "this call to the bullpen is brought to you by AT&T" or whatever it is.

I was hoping YES would increase the number of games for the Kay/Cone.O'Neil trio, but I guess that's not going to happen.

Look out!! Kay and O'Neill have an entertaining rapport. O'Neill has always cracked me up. You know who was an under-rated Yankee announcer if you are old enough to remember him? Frank Messer. A real pro. I even enjoyed Al Trautwig and Tony Kubek back in the MSG days, although I understand they were not everyone's cup of tea (especially The Boss.)

I grew up with the Frank Messer/Bill White/Scooter Rizzuto trio so they will always have a special place for be in my baseball heart. Messer used to do the player intros for Old Timer's Day.

I grew up with the Frank Messer/Bill White/Scooter Rizzuto trio so they will always have a special place for be in my baseball heart. Messer used to do the player intros for Old Timer's Day. Good recall on Messer doing the Old Timer's Days, Chi. Bill White was also very good IMO. Had a laconic style -- the Bucky Dent home run is a good example -- "deep to left -- home run." In the style of the NFL announcer Ray Scott. Compare to Sterling's "it is high, it is far" babble, followed by some idiotic "Bucky dents the ball" type of comment. Before age began to take its toll on The Scooter's broadcasting skills (although not on his old uncle loveableness), he was a perceptive analyst of the game, with a perfect New York baseball voice to match. People who don't remember him from the first part of his career sometimes find that hard to believe.

Messer was one of the old time pros that did his job right and didn’t need to make himself the star... Yes he was. It was about the game, not about him. You might also recall that before he came to the Yankees he did Orioles broadcasts with Chuck Thompson and Jim O'Donnell. Man I hated Chuck Thompson as a kid, he was such a homer and hated the Yankees (or so it seemed to me). But in retrospect, he had a great broadcasting style and he just sounded like Baltimore. Crabcakes and National Bo. I liked him better on Colts games than Orioles games.

Chuck Thompson reminds me a bit of the recently deceased Earl Weaver in that I hated them both so much that I wound up loving them. Thompson always wore that dorky-looking hat (please don’t tell me it’s just like yours) sand there were no more annoying words than “Ain’t the beer cold”? that would signify an Orioles rally...Bit the voicevsas amazing and there was comfortable familiarity that let him get away with loving his team... To Weaver’s passing, I should like to say “Good bye you little sumbitch. I’d never wish a feisty little shit like you to Rest In Peace because I think that would drive you crazy. You were a great opponent that caused me endless misery. We will never again see the like of you. Love you, Earl. Miss you, too”.

Ha, ha. I’m just a ham and egger. No chance I rise above AAA. Like Brockmire after he was exiled, although I dont drink much and I’ve never called a Philipino cock fighting tournament.
