All right, boys and girls! It’s time another episode of “Fun Facts About Stan Bahnsen”! In 1968 Stan built a fine Rookie of the Year season around his Yankee marks of 17-12; 2.05. Remember 1968 was the year of the pitcher, so that ERA was only good for a + 140. He also spun a couple of 14 win seasons with the Yanks.
The year Bahnsen was traded to the White Sox he (‘73) posted up at 21-16, and the following year he went 18-21. He made a total of 85 starts over those two seasons.
His career mark was 146-149 with a +97 ERA, so his best seasons were spent before age 27 with the Yankees.
Extra credit if you remember who Bahnsen was traded for. (Rich McKinney)
Extra extra credit if you know the date that McKinney hit his only HR as a Yankee in that ‘73 season.

Me neither. Hell, I’m just a crazy old man posting on a forum. What do you expect of me? Phillip Diehl: Looks like a giant seven year old. Was 26th round pick. Doesn’t throw real hard. Has nasty movement on his pitches. Can he really get MLB hitters out, or will be be Edwar, JR.? I’m calling him my favorite dark horse relief prospect. Alert! Edwar was once my favorite dark horse pitching prospect... Edwar and his filthy changeup and his comical appearance, [img alt=" " class="smile" src="//storage.proboards.com/6828121/images/udcwFqPimnXDtjoTmoVL.gif"] Edwar!

There may be -- what -- two or three others on here who can remember The Bahnsen Burner. He was (along with Wilbur Wood and Tom Bradley) part of what was almost surely the last three-man rotation in baseball with the White Sox in the early 1970s. Even way back then, that was very retro. Another of Chuck Tanner's experiments. Without looking it up, I have some recollection of Wood going 24-20 in one of those years. Of course he was a knuckleballer, so normalcy standards do not apply. And anybody who can actually remember when Rich McKinney hit his only HR as a Yankee in 1973 either has an incredible photographic memory or more likely has way too much time on his hands. Or at least did in 1973.

Speaking of having too much time on their hands... I looked up the play be play of the 12-hit SHO authored by Bahnsen. After 4.1 innings Bahnsen had already allowed 9 of those hits, including a pair of doubles. Bert Campeneris was the leafoff hitter in the game and singled to start the game, but oddly was tossed out at third when Bill North followed with a double. In the fifth inning, Campeneris singled for the A’s seventh hit with one out, and then was thrown out at third again as North hit a single to center and advanced to second on the throw. The next batter hit the third straight single for hit # nine, but North could not go home on the play and wound up stranded there.
Three more hits over the last four innings and the deed was done. Who says speed doesn’t kill or go into slumps? It seems Campy did all he could to help “Stanley Struggle” (games like this one helped to give him a new mid-career nickname) finish off his shutout...

I'm watching a recording last night's game against Baltimore. Cessa started and is throwing some nasty off speed pitches, pitching 4 scoreless innings. At age 26, it's time for Cessa to step up and prove if he's a major leaguer or not. The opportunity is certainly there with these two spots in the rotation currently open.

I don’t look for Cessa to ever be much more than a marginal starter, but he has great stuff that could play up in the pen. I do think he gets unfairly criticized though as a guy who is only called upon in to start in emergencies, often without time to get stretched out. I’d take him ahead of our past Ponson/ Mitre combo...And I believe he could do all right if he got into a rotation for a longer stretch...with some hope of staying in the majors. In other words, in another city...

In today’s game, five solid innings is all that is needed from Cessa, especially with the Yankees’ bullpen. If Cessa gets ahead of batters, he has the stuff to be productive at the end of the rotation. Heck, four innings from Cessa and three from German every five days could hold serve until the real starters return.

This is his year since he’s out of options. And they have a need with CC and Severino starting on the DL.
