For a moment, because of the way he's pitching, I thought you wrote "Sale fire". Averaged 89 mph on his fastball last start. I watched some of that game. Sale looked awful against a pathetic-looking Toronto lineup. Who are these guys?
He of course could turn it around -- I even assume he will, he's a great pitcher -- but his ERA after three starts is 9.00.
The last time Boston went this many games into a season without a starter having a win was 1908. Four years before Fenway Park was built and they played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds.
That site BTW is now part of Northeastern University. The centerfield fence in 1908 was 630 feet from home plate. A nice little poke, I would say. There was a tool shed in the outfield and sand in spots where grass would not grow. I used to go over that way frequently when I lived in Boston -- I had some business at Northeastern -- it was where the first World Series game was played in 1903.
Back to the here and now -- Lourdes Gurriel of Toronto stole home against Sale. It was almost a shock to see it -- it just doesn't happen much these days, but it was electrifying.

I tease Russ, of course...but that play last night clearly demonstrated what’s wrong when hitters no longer care if they make contact...Sometimes all it takes is a good old-fashioned nubber to make all the difference...
Neat that Gurriel stole home. Throwback to the good old days...

Neat that Gurriel stole home. Throwback to the good old days... Small ball is so rare that I admit I enjoyed watching it. It was like somebody at The Masters using hickory shaft clubs. Even the Sox announcers doffed their caps. A lot of nobodies in that Toronto lineup. The catcher Jansen looks like Chris Sabo with the goggles -- or Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo if you prefer. Our old pal Billy McKinney starting in the OF. But for one day it was very entertaining.

Neat that Gurriel stole home. Throwback to the good old days... I actually think it is more representative of the current days - because it had to have been all scouted and analyzed in advance. They knew the Sox let Sale pitch from the windup with runners on so they had to have prepared their team in advance for that.

If he's out for the year we can stick a fork in the Yankees. Maybe not. What if German continues to dominate hitters all season?...One thing we haven’t seen yet from Severino is consistency. When he’s good, he’s very good... but my... when he’s bad, he’s really bad...

Fastball down 4 MPH from last year...yikes! That contract extension not looking great. Almost as bad as the one the Yanks gave Severino, who hasn't pitched at all. If he's out for the year we can stick a fork in the Yankees. These two things are not comparable at all. Sevy got 4 years $40mm at 25 years old and suffered an injury after the fact. Sale got 5 years $145mm for his ages 31 through 35 seasons, a guy who while he has been a great pitcher throughout his career with a history of breaking down in the second half of seasons and is now throwing puss. It would definitely be very bad for the Yankees if he misses the entire year and significantly hurts their chances to win this year but I wouldnt go as far as sticking the fork in them fully...lots of talent on already this team, Kuechel still on FA, and trades can be made.

I was it saying it is the same situation, obviously they are different people, but these are the two aces for each team. If either is gone for the season or ineffective their teams are going to have to somehow find another ace. As of today, the Yankees can hope Severino can contribute in the second half. I am hopeful that the lat issue as unfortunate as it was might help avoid Severino or the Yankees rushing him back from the more serious/risky issue with his arm so hopefully we get the real Severino in the second half, and maybe Montgomery as well.

Agree that both teams are sorely lacking for an ace to pitch like an ace (whether it be bc of injury or ineffectiveness/decline...though the Yankees are in better shape with Tanaka than the Sox secondary options). But the statement of "almost as bad as the one (the extension) the Yankees gave Severino" is what I take issue with there. Severino signed a small (by ace standards) extension at a young age then got hurt (as starting pitchers do). Sale got a longer one worth nearly 3x the AAV, in his 30s, and looks toast. I dont know how anyone can suggest that Sevy missing a few months for the Yanks (or even this whole year as terrible as that would be) means his extension is "bad", let alone worse than what the Red Sox did with Sale (assuming Sale doesnt return to dominant form) as the phrase "almost as bad as" suggests.

The Yankee game is so lame that I'm watching others. This was impressive.
