How bad would have the Babe been roasted on social media for that and many of the other things he did? The press in that day never reported on the foibles of the people they were covering, either in sports or anything else. In the case of baseball, at that time the teams picked up the expenses of the reporters who covered them, which was another incentive to avoid dishing the dirt. I'm not at all convinced that we are more enlightened by knowing the private lives of athletes, but there certainly is a voracious audience for it. In the case of Babe Ruth, he was genuinely liked by most of the people around him. I think his gregarious, living large personality would still play well today. Not an exact comparison by any means, but I think someone like Rob Gronkowski would fall into the general category. "Tide Pods"... |
