I think his career was over already. He seemed to be constantly hurt (why some players get hurt year after year is beyond me).

Welcome, Utah! Hope you decide to hang around! This place is “home” after all. I can’t celebrate Bird’s failures. I was so hoping that he’s find that short porch in RF a few hundred times over a couple of decades. Just won’t be happening.. Well, Bird hit 11 dingers last year in a little more than half of 500 at bats, so age or not, the logic remains faulty. I cannot celebrate Bird’s injuries either.

I feel bad for Bird, but there's a chance these foot injury issues will not go away. I imagine they will send him back to Scranton once and if he comes back this season.

I do not expect Bird to return. Tearing the plantar fascia is likely a career ender for him.

Mel Brooks The past is best forgotten to live in the moment. friend inger……...we are both guilty of baiting and incivility....I responded to the present Bird topic because my critique of his ML ability had brought abuse upon me personally and caused my withdrawal from the board....I don't often share such critiques as forcefully, but in the case of Bird, I felt the expectations far exceeded reality....a study of my posts on that subject when he first came up will show the doubts I had, but a hope that I was wrong.....I'm truly sorry for the sake of Bird and the Yankees that he was not the projected very good hitter.... I ruffled feathers of some on the board by a moderate stance on the steroid era players...others by calling for electronic calling of balls and strikes....I believe events are moving in that direction, and Bonds, Clemens, et al, will be in the Hall and there will be finally an accurate calling of the strike zone.....now, I will be accused of thinking I am always right...or "celebrating Bird's failure"...neither of which is even close to the truth..... I was happy in the tranquility of just watching games and contributing to discussion on another board....I will simply return to that existence in peace....bye

I think peace and tranquility to be a wonderful goal to seek out. If you can’t find it in one place and you can in another, then I would think it wise to stay in the place that provides you the most happiness. My best to you as you seek that place. If I wee you, I certainly would do the same and I respect your following of your wishes. At the same time, I find joy here and will choose to stay. I have a long history here with many people and wish to continue that history. I do agree that we all occasionally bait each other, usually with good natured intentions. Sometimes things get out of hand. It’s regrettable. At those times it’s best to have short toes so as to avoid having them stepped on and a short memory. That’s not always possible, I suppose... Blessings to all...

Greg Bird is what he has been since first coming to the major leagues, with only a few brief episodes of hitting....he has a long swing with holes that he cannot cover...he is an "almost" that can maybe hit .200-.225 with maybe 10-15 home runs if he had 500 AB's in a season...of course no team is going to give him that....he may hang on somewhere for awhile but his defense is not good enough to make a team for late-inning defensive replacement. it's ironic, but I was attacked here for this opinion, and told, to my amazement. that my opinion was not of worth...I wondered if he was dismissive in part because of my age... how silly that attacker is looking as he continues to not be able to see what has been so readily apparent since Bird first got to the major leagues...… all of us are wrong at times about a player.....when I first saw George Shuba I thought he was going to be one of the greats...I shared that with a Brooklyn scout who gave me a smile, and told me what zones he could not cover and that the pitchers would figure him out....and of course he saw better than I did and was eventually right... Let’s put a bow on these inaccuracies and selective memory, especially since I’ve been alluded to as an “attacker” and a “sniper.” 1. A healthy Greg Bird could hit “maybe 10-15 home runs in a season of 500” at bats: Last season, Bird hit 11 home runs in 274 at bats. For his entire career, Bird has amassed a total of 611 at bats and 32 home runs. 2. No one wrote your “opinion was not of worth,” except you. A faulty inference you made and then attributed repeatedly to me. As for ageism, my best friend in the world is an octogenarian whose good counsel, intelligence, and experience I always welcome and value. 3. This began last season when you made the statements that Bird had been given “five years” to prove himself and as long as Bird was in Pinstripes, Cashman would never look for an alternative at first base - the ridiculous “eggs in one basket” theory of yours (which Luke Voit proved quite wrongheaded). I disagreed, and questioned your arithmetic (a lingering problem, evidently), as five years from 2018, Bird was in A ball. If these constitute attacks, then vaya con Dios.
