Yeah. I wanted to see him get a chance this season. I’m glad he did. I don’t know how much longer I can stand to watch though. He’s almost becoming Chris Davis.
The perplexed look on his face. The defeated walk away from the plate. How awful that he’s at this point. We know from last season’s Neil Walker failures that Boone is a very patient manager. How much more leash can he give to Bird? A day? A week? Surely not a month...
Bird needs to do something, and he needs to do it quickly. We don’t really need two primary first basemen. Voit can take over there, and we can utilize DJLM there. Recall Estrada. Mc Broom. Ford. Grab an usher out of the stands...whatever...

Frazier already has more total bases than Bird or Voit, so neither is exactly tearing it up thus far.

He’s getting more of a chance than I expected because of those injuries but he isn’t doing anything with it.

Anyone who can hit .180, strike out 50 percent of the time and have poor defensive skills.

Hopefully Stanton or Hicks.

Greg Bird is what he has been since first coming to the major leagues, with only a few brief episodes of hitting....he has a long swing with holes that he cannot cover...he is an "almost" that can maybe hit .200-.225 with maybe 10-15 home runs if he had 500 AB's in a season...of course no team is going to give him that....he may hang on somewhere for awhile but his defense is not good enough to make a team for late-inning defensive replacement...…..
it's ironic, but I was attacked here for this opinion, and told, to my amazement. that my opinion was not of worth...I wondered if he was dismissive in part because of my age...
how silly that attacker is looking as he continues to not be able to see what has been so readily apparent since Bird first got to the major leagues...…
all of us are wrong at times about a player.....when I first saw George Shuba I thought he was going to be one of the greats...I shared that with a Brooklyn scout who gave me a smile, and told me what zones he could not cover and that the pitchers would figure him out....and of course he saw better than I did and was eventually right...

Welcome, Utah! Hope you decide to hang around! This place is “home” after all.
I can’t celebrate Bird’s failures. I was so hoping that he’s find that short porch in RF a few hundred times over a couple of decades. Just won’t be happening..

I remember my first impression of Shuba, too. It was last night, off Utah’s post. His 7-year career as a reserve player for the Brooklyn Dodgers ended the year after I was born.
Thanks for sharing the name, Utah. Because of your quick mention he lives yet another blip in his history. And I can’t think him without thinking of Don Shula, former Colts and Dolphins coaching great.
So much history...

I have never, and will never, celebrate the failure of a young Yankee player.....and that certainly includes Bird....I will always hope for his success even when he is no longer a Yankee...……..
Shuba got a lot of press in the NY papers coming up, and dang...he looked for real at first, but the pitchers figured him out...which was bad for George and the Dodgers, but lucky for the other teams that had to face the Dodgers...……..they had a stacked offense anyway with Campy, Robinson, Furillo, Snider, Hodges, Reese and Cox....adding a "Mantle-type" to that outfield would have been too much...
edit....btw, Shuba had one of the good nicknames coming up...Shotgun Shuba……...for those of you who understand scatter-guns it was appropriate...he had a strong arm, but not an accurate one...…..
