Trying to recruit new posters

I suppose you’re right, Rizzuto. I must confess that I’ve shown gravelistic tendencies since childhood. In the first house I can recall us ever living in, we didn’t have indoor plumbing, nor any kind of central heating. We used a kerosene space heater in the main living room to keep warm. That old house didn’t look like much. Like in Tom Sawyer’s Aunt Polly’s neighborhood, we were too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash.

But one thing we did have was some gravel in the driveway and even the yard. There had once been a commercial building of some sort next door that had succumbed to fire, and they had graveled the area for several hundred square feet. Yes, gravel. Beautiful blue gravel. Not the small, finer stuff mind you, but pieces you could pick up and throw at stuff.

The railroad tracks were right across the road from that old shanty. My older brothers would throw rocks at the passing cars for sport. At only three and four years of age, my arm at first fell short, but by the time we moved away it was straight and true. I doubt the throws were reaching the train, but my brothers were marveling at my throws getting stronger.

The home we lived in was equally poor-equipped, so we brought the kerosene heater with us to help us build a life. It was a farmer’s tenant house. Because of that there was a long driveway that reached our house and continued beyond to the farmer’s house. A long driveway filled a strange new material for me. Oh, it was gravel all right. But of an orange color, sort of a creamy orange. These stones were rounder, but I found myself loving them just as much. This was when I discovered myself to be bi-graveluer. Yes, I could love multiple grades of gravel. I had no idea that most of the other children had toys. Bats and balls. Tops and dolls. I had my gravel, and THAT my friend was all I needed.

There. With that off my chest, I do feel better. I feel like a new man. And no wonder. Colorado has every kind of rock the western part of this country has to offer. Yet, I have chosen to cover my front lawn area with blue slag from the steel mills. I also have a lot of magnets. I can now go out in my front yard and pick up my “gravel” with a magnet. It’s much better than having to bend over to pick it up. I can’t wait! I already spilled a bit of the slag dust in my garage. Instead of grabbing the broom to clean it up, I used one of my bigger magnets...

I’m so happy you guys don’t find me odd for this. If it were perceived as odd, we might not draw new posters.

Uh-oh... I think I may be getting a “vibe” here...

I went over to the old Scout/247 board tonight and was able to private message some of the posters over there that we would like to see here. Hopefully one or two of them come over.

We can hope... right? As long as there is hope, there is life!!!

Just curious, which posters did you try to PM? Who are we missing?

Yea, I understand there's an ebb and flow. Not everyone is going to post all the time. But I wish we had some more participation at times. Those guys you mentioned were all wonderful posters. And now we don't hear from them at all.
