I didn’t think Voit was going to make it to second. Horrible defense...

Gardner sliding head first again. Serious question- is he an idiot or just completely uncoachable at this point?

Gardner sliding head first again. Serious question- is he an idiot or just completely uncoachable at this point? I just said pretty much the same thing to my son. With all these injuries, why is Gardner sliding headfirst like that?

With all these injuries, why is Gardner sliding headfirst like that? It is just asinine. It is demonstrably slower and carries a higher risk of injury. All these years in baseball and he can’t learn?

Gardner sliding head first again. Serious question- is he an idiot or just completely uncoachable at this point? I think that I’d have to review each play to determine the fastest way to the bag. If he truly slides into the bag, then the friction of his body is going to slow him down. If he is running and lowers his body and dives into the base, he may be at least as fast if not faster due to the additional reach of his hand/arm. Either way, it can’t be more than the tiniest fraction of a second difference. Given the additional beating the body takes in a dive, and the additional risk of injury, I would say it’s likely that the dive into first is not the wisest choice most of the time. I can recall having done this about twice in all my years of playing. I did indeed make sure I was in a position (head lowered) to dive, not slide, and that I was a bit overcome with passion at the moment I made the decision to dive. In addition, I was constantly diving for balls or making sliding catches in the outfield, so I believe that also put me into that kind of mode when running bases (though I restrained that passion when running to first base)...
