Phew, Paxton looking like Holder today. Down 5-0 already. He'll be lucky to go five. I think Cashman was expecting more when he traded for Paxton, he's been more like an end of the rotation starter. I agree. At times he can look brilliant, but he's wildly inconsistent.

I was reviewing Boone’s career and was a bit surprised that he only put up a +94 OPS. He had a couple pretty good seasons, and of course was derailed by an injury that lost his age 31 season. Up to the point where he got injured he had a +99 OPS, and then he wasn’t the same player when he returned. Nonetheless, he was a good fielding 3B who was good enough to slide over to SS when the need arose in a game, hit as many as 38 doubles and 26 HR in a season and once stole over 30 bases, being an effective base thief up to the point of his injury. He tended to be a bit up and down, but I can safely say in his injured year he would have likely tacked on another 20-25 HR and 70-90 RBI to his resume and that he may have been a slightly better player over the next couple of seasons after his return had he not lost some speed and perhaps some of his base to utilize his core for power. All things considered he’s a good demonstration of why we should all keep ourselves aware of the fact that OPS+ alone is a horrible way to judge the ability of a baseball player. His defensive skills, his speed, and his instincts are completely out of the equation. I would rate Aaron Boone as a better than average player. Actually for about three years in his prime, I’d call him a good player... thanks for the post....using the same analysis, would you be interested in comparing Aaron to Dad Bob, and Grandad Ray? I think Ray might have the best numbers... While that’s an idea with merit, it only works if someone (like you?) has enough information on Ray to help me value him defensively. I never saw him play. As for Bob, there was little question of his defensive prowess. He was an absolute beast behind the plate. By the way, don’t forget brother Brett. He played in a tainted era and had some elevated stats for a while. Just sayin’...

Almost 70 pitches through two innings for Thornton. Over one hour to get through two innings.

Yea, he doesn't look right at all. The Big Maple has a crack in his trunk. Of course we all do, but he also may not have the greatest roots anchoring him down...And it’s affecting his limbs, which LEAVES the ball out over the plate... (It’s amazing that I did that)... Good to see your humor branching out and flowering but you may be barking up the wrong tree.

I pine for more tree puns.
