LeMahieu has played in 76 games for the Yankees this year, and has played second base in 53 of them, so I'm not sure you can characterize that as rarely playing there.
Anyway, for sure a guy like Judge will always get voted on to the team if he's healthy because fans recognize his name and he is (justifiably) a popular player. Once you're on that track, like Jeter was and Ripken before him, it almost becomes a lifetime reward.
It actually does seem as if most players like playing in the All Star game. It's not like the Pro Bowl for the NFL. Of course sometimes the reasons are contract-related. I saw where Tommy Pham of the Rays was upset about not being named because it is a selling point in contract negotiations. Usually I am happy enough if Yankee participation is limited, especially when it comes to pitchers, which only means Chapman this year.
The Dodgers and Astros with three starting pitchers each does give a little preview of problems the Yankees might have in the post-season.

2B is LeMahieu's natural position and he's won several gold gloves playing there for The Rockies. He's good at 1B & 3B too, but he's great at 2B.

My guess is you could put him in the outfield and he'd do okay there too. The guy is an athlete. Even if he hits a rough patch in the second half, he's already done more than I think the Yankees could have expected. I love his totally professional, Joe Cool approach. |
