I’d definitely put Jeter behind Mantle, Berra, and Mattingly...

I’d definitely put Jeter behind Mantle, Berra, and Mattingly... Just our potty old opinions, of course, but I think Jeter had a bigger impact on Yankee history than Mattingly. A lot of it had to do with timing, naturally, and I would agree that Donny's best seasons were better than Derek's. But Jeter's impact, which is what I was going by, was more long-lasting and ultimately more significant to the team, IMO. Jeter had a better supporting cast, for sure.

My three favorite Yankees were Munson, Mattingly, and Jeter.

I was just thinking of individual quality of play/talent...

My three favorite Yankees were Munson, Mattingly, and Jeter. Great choices. I love all three of them. I would put Mo in that conversation as well. Only because of my age, I would have Mantle and Ford on that list. And while it's way too early to anoint him, Judge has the capacity to be a part of my own personal grouping.

Gleyber could force his way into all of our hearts before he’s done...

I was just thinking of individual quality of play/talent... I think we're using two different criteria. I was thinking in terms of historical impact. I will never have a bad word to say about Don Mattingly. I just think that if you're writing a history of the Yankees, Jeter's name is going to be more prominent, if only for the post-season accomplishments.

Jeter was #5 on that all-time Yankees list I mentioned the other day...that is rarefied air, and probably a couple rungs higher than I would place him...but that is just opinions speaking...I would have Berra at #5 and Ford at #6, then Jeter...just the way I see it...

The Mount Rushmore is of course Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle. And, it shall likely always be.

If Mattingly had played on those championship teams of the late nineties he would be higher on the list. My second favorite player behind Mantle.
