I do loves me some Italian food...Spaghetti...Pizza...Chicken Parm...But I hate tomatoes, can't eat 'em. Can't even eat spaghetti or pizza sauce if it isn't very finely pureed. I "make" my own spaghetti sauce by using the Hunts Tomato Sauce with Garlic and Herbs and adding Hunts tomato paste with garlic and herbs, a bunch of garlic salt, and more Italian herbs to suit my taste. When we had Ruthie's nephew, wife and four kids here, I made a huge pot of spaghetti and the kids absolutely went bonkers over the sauce. Made me feel good because Ruthie likes that Ragu or Progresso stuff right out the jar...yuck...All I can taste is tomatoes...
There is something about that Hunts brand. Is it because it still comes in a can while the rest are in jars? Is it because that's what my mom used to use so, so many years ago? Because it's cheap? I think it's only cheap because they still use cans...Jars have to be a lot more expensive. I dunno...
I know, you opened this thread to read about the Rule V draft. But then again, would you have opened a thread called "my spaghetti sauce"? I think not. And now you know. Call it an extra value...

Yankees add to 40-man roster: RHP Albert Abreu, RHP Domingo Acevedo, INF Thairo Estrada, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga, OF Billy McKinney, INF Gleyber Torres. All right. Perfect picks...I was fearful that Loaisiga would be left off and lost before I learned to spell his name...Can I buy a consonant? When you come right down to it, consonant is not an easy word to spell, either. It's been years since I've probably used that word in a written sentence, and it was bit of a struggle... Yeah, Cashman played this about as well as it could be played. It will be disappointing to lose Mesa, Jr. and Feyereisen but the damage could have been worse.

but did lasagna really have a chance at staying on someones 25 man a whole season? Lol, Lazera. You did well...the title, the comment...it's all very funny and appreciated... You know, the odd thing about these kids and staying on someone's roster is that as long as we have cellar-dwellers who have designs on staying there, like the Padres were last season, you just never know what the heck they are going to do. That being said, the Padres DID NOT SUCCEED IN FINISHING IN LAST PLACE! How bad of a front office do you have to be to let someone fall behind you in the standings without further depleting your roster to bottom feed below them??? And, that spaghetti sauce talk has got me hungry for nice big plate of...either spaghetti or ravioli. I haven't decided yet. I love a nice plate fixed with half cheese and half beef raviolis and "MY" sauce...no chunks of tomato allowed...

I'm also in the "Grumpy old bastard non-Italians that want to eat spaghetti but don't want chunks of tomato in the sauce" club...
I know that for a "true Italian" no-a-chunks-a-of-a-tomato-an-a-garlic-a in the sauce is sacrilege. I had an Italian "Uncle Frank" once. He lived with my Aunt Rita in Patterson, NJ for many years. It was funny when I look back on it. Frank had his own bedroom when we were there, but they lived together and loved another for over thirty years until Frank passed away. I those times it was so important to appear "proper". Frank had a bakery, and we loved it when he would bring Rita down to visit in MD. He would pack a HUGE box full of his baked goods and give them to us...MMMM, mmmm, mmmm. No tomatoes in those jelly rolls...

We had to take Uncle Frank to the groomer and get his back hair trimmed once a month. He was mowing the lawn once and one of the kids next door was wondering why that man was out mowing the lawn with a sweater on when it was 95 degrees outside... Rizzo is true Italian too, I do believe. I'm sure he would be quite disappointed to eat the "Italian" food that I like...My nephew recently married a girl who's mother is Italian, and my sister in law invited them over for dinner. My sister in law has always thought that spaghetti was a "fail safe" dinner and we have always suffered silently at her bland recipe. Now, the Italian momma-in-a-law-a has given her a new recipe (but with a nicely pureed sauce, so I guess there is no hard and fast law in Italy about that). It is quite good, though a bit sweeter than I prefer. Other than the little touch of sweetness, it tastes quite similar to mine, with the extra garlic and spices...I think the extra ingredient that I don't use was rosemary...

The Yankees couldnβt protect everyone. After stashing as many quality prospects as they could on their 40-man roster to ensure they remain with the franchise, the Yankees lost four players Thursday in the major league Rule 5 draft: pitchers Nestor Cortes, Jose Mesa, Anyelo Gomez and first baseman Mike Ford. Cortes and Mesa were selected by Baltimore, Gomez by Atlanta and Ford by Seattle. While none is a top-shelf prospect, all had intrigue. Ford, a Princeton graduate, split time between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, combining to slash .270/.404/.471 with 20 home runs in 126 games. Cortes also rose as high as Triple-A last season, in which the left-handed swingman pitched to a 2.42 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 104 2/3 innings. Mesa, the son of the former longtime major leaguer, reached Double-A last season, when the righty notched a 1.93 ERA in 84 innings, mostly in relief. Gomez shot through the Yankeesβ system last season, finally making a Triple-A appearance at the yearβs close. The 24-year-old right-handed reliever had a 1.92 ERA in 70 1/3 innings. Prospects can be subject to the draft if they have spent enough time in the minor leagues without being added to the teamβs major league roster. The selected players now are added to the 25-man rosters of their new teams for next season, or else they are waived and can be offered back to their original team. The Yankees had scrambled to clear as many roster spots as possible before the Nov. 20 deadline, protecting Gleyber Torres, Albert Abreu, Domingo Acevedo, Thairo Estrada, Billy McKinney, Jake Cave and Jonathan Loaisiga. nypost.com/2017/12/14/yankees-treasure-trove-of-prospects-takes-a-hit-in-rule-5-draft/

Tequila is very upset that we lost Gomez, Mesa and Cortes because they were Prospects. She once again has stopped eating her food. I think the only thing that will make her happy again, is if re-sign Nunez...
OR, maybe I should try feeding her Inger's Spaghetti with his sauce?
"Inger, do you use Peyote in your sauce?"
"FORM A BOX and hold, hold, hold The Box to protect our Prospects; for they are OUR FUTURE!!!"
We should have traded Gardner & Ellsbury and we might have been able to Protect one/two of Gomez, Cortes, Mesa...SAD!!!

To get a bit more serious for a moment...I do think that Nestor Cortes, (Cortez The Killer for Neil Young fans) will have a fine future as an MLB starter. I even think he could stick in Baltimore's rotation this season. That's not a good thing in a way, because he's not quite ready, but Baltimore I do believe is going to stink in 2018. Cortes is as fast as Tommy John was post-surgery, which is to say that he couldn't reach 90 if someone goosed him in the ass before he threw a pitch, but he has great command and pitch-ability. In that tiny ball yard in Baltimore, that may not be enough, but with exposure he may wind up on another team some day. I look for him to reach 180 innings and have an ERA near 5.00. That will keep him working in Baltimore.
I really like Ford and have felt sort of bad for him because he's a good first baseman. The trouble is that good seldom gets you noticed at first base. Everyone wants that heavy-duty power to show before the promotion to MLB. There have been some first basemen that didn't have a lot of HR pop that have been quite valuable through the years. Keith Hernandez. John Olerud. It happens. In today's game the only one we have is Joe Mauer. I think Ford can be a 20 homer guy though, and since Seattle is banking their hopes on a guy that seldom walks in Ryon Healy, (who's parents apparently couldn't spell ""Ryan" correctly) but has power...and is below average vs. RHP, Ford just may be as good as or better than Daniel Vogelbach, who has limited success in limited MLB experience as his possible platoon mate. As a platoon mate, he could "win" the position and wind up with 60-70% of Seattle's at bats from 1B, and his defense is good, too. My gut, which usually speaks from "down under" is telling me that if Ford doesn't stick with the Mariners, they may offer a player in trade with the Yankees in order to at least stash him at AAA to add to their LHH first base depth...and he may beat Vogelsong out in ST...Interesting.
Mesa and Gomez will have a good chance of sticking as well...
I especially will want to see Cortes and Ford succeed, as I believe they can be very good, but were blocked in the Yankees system...

DoMe... what is your definition of a prospect? Is any minor leaguer a prospect? I don't think any of the 3 players you mentioned were on any prospect lists?

How you doing Sierchio? OUR Prospect definition is as follows:
1. Any young player 29-years or younger in our Farm System or another team's system (we do not care if on a List or not)
2. Ages 30-33 years old are hitting the Retread Highway = Getting more set in their ways, lost that all out attitude & energy levels are dropping, production is beginning to drop, more injury prone, not that open to changing their ways etc. plus they are more expensive = HOWEVER there are exceptions
3. Ages 34 years old PLUS, a pure Retread = However there are exceptions like Mo, for instance. If I inherited a team with Retreads it would be like Flea Market Trade Scenario and if I couldn't trade them I would cut them as WE should be doing with Ellsbury = Expensive, injury prone, production is way down & most important blocking Prospects.
I would be very reluctant to trade Prospects, however, once again, there would exceptions. To fill any openings that my Prospects couldn't currently, I would turn to FA but with good common sense, logical deals/contracts short term...
If I was the owner of a team and had a REAL HOT producing Prospect 28-29 years old; I would try to extend their contract (midseason, etc.)for MAYBE, Maybe 2-3 more years. However as he got closer to his contract expiring, I but also would him = there are exceptions. However, if this same Prospect show signs of not signing an extension or had stated he wanted to look at FA and/or was just an average or barely above average I would trade him for more Younger Prospects at a blink of my eye.
If I had a 22-year Prospect (that was highly touted) but, that wasn't taking directions and no matter how much time/coaching we gave him, we just couldn't see near future improvements = trade him for another Prospects at a blink of the eye.
I also would be bringing up our Farm System Prospects as soon as possible even if they were barely 20-years old and continued to give them constant pro-active coaching and also decent playing time. Their attitude is infectious so is their energy levels. WE saw this last year in the Yankee dugout with more Youth on the Roster.
The most years I would sign a player to, would be 4-5-years (and I would have to be pressed to do so OR so overwhelm by the Player's production, attitude, etc.)= However they are exceptions.
I would not be giving out NO TRADE CLAUSES = these just come back &haunt us--see Ellsbury and so many more. I would be rebuilding with Prospects every two-three years, not the entire roster, but key positions where we had a player blocking a much better Prospect.
Boy am I tired...time to smoke the Prospect Pipe. Let me begin the Chant as Tequila does her dance...
FORM A BOX...hold, hold, hold the box to protect our Prospects; for they are OUR FUTURE!!!
