The Yankees have added outfielder Jake Cave and right-hander Nick Rumbelow to the 40-man roster, the team announced earlier today. Both players were due to become minor league free agents this offseason. The Yankees now have two open spots on the 40-man roster.

I'm surprised that they added Jake Cave. He doesn't seem to get much love from the FO for whatever reason...Maybe he'll still get a shot in NY before he's pushed out of the nest...On the other hand, I'm surprised they waited so long to decide to protect Rumbelow. I guess I'm easily surprised by moves on the 40-man...

I'm thinking that way, too...I also wonder if he could be a replacement for Hicks if we deal him away. Hicks looked like he turned a corner last year, but he could also be a nice "trade high" chip if the Yankees don't think he can sustain the performance. From June 20th to the end of the season he hit .207/.310/.355. He only had a .225 babip, so one could argue that 10 more hits would have upped the ante considerably...I'm cautiously optimistic that he'll be a good fourth going forward...I did like his CF play a lot better in the second half last season than I did in the first half... |

The Rangers are set to acquire right-hander Ronald Herrera from the Yankees, reports MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (on Twitter). The two teams announced the trade shortly thereafter, revealing that lefty Reiver Sanmartin is going to the Yankees in return. Herrera was on the Yankees’ 40-man roster and will thus be added to the Rangers’ 40-man roster as well.
