Phenomenal game for Tanaka.

In defense of Mike Ford, coming into this game he had reached base safely in 15 of 17 games and had 3 homers in just 56 at bats. That’s close to a 30 dinger pace over a full season. Small sample size. I’d give him some more opportunities. And, his OBP is higher than Gary Sanchez and about what Clint Frazier’s was. Tauchman didn’t light it up at first, either.

Tanaka's performance against this red hot Blue Jay lineup has been the biggest take from this game.

Tanaka's performance against this red hot Blue Jay lineup has been the biggest take from this game. He may be beginning to trust his new grip on the split finger fastball. And, he seems to have improved somewhat since moving to the first base side of the rubber.

We might have to win this one 1-0.

I’ve noticed this, too. He’s more effective when he takes an opposite field approach. He did have a couple really hard hit balls taken away against Boston.
