Its remarkable to me that there are two starting pitchers shown as having an ERA under 3 in the AL. But the league ERA to date is the highest since 2004. The average for the last ten year is about .4.15, we are over that by nearly a half run.
LMH is ahead by one percentage point over Brantley for the batting championship. I did not realize it was that close.
Is there any way to paste an excel graph in here to show some data?

I can't get my graph to past in here so I will go with calculations. From 2000 (when league ERA was near 5) to 2014 (the low point of the last 20 years) it fell 22 percent. Then starting in 2015 until this partial year it raised nearly 20 percent. I don't know what, if anything, drove those changes but its remarkable to me. www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/pitch.shtmlA sign of just how high the era's are is that with the exception of the period of 1994-2004 where there was unusually high ERA's, 4.61 is the highest since 1939. The chart I created is below (not sure anyone will be able to see it). statistics.xlsx (16.02 KB)

It’s surprising that ERAs aren’t even higher with all the HR being hit...But, going back to the late nineties and very early 2000’s the steroid epidemic was in full bloom...

My guess is that more strike outs needed to obtain the additional home runs has reduced the number of people who were on base when the home runs were hit Some have suggested besides steroids the addition of two teams in 93 increased league batting average. Too many bad pitchers were used it is argued because of the expansion.

That happens every time there is expansion, so I concur...But normally 4-5-6 years later everything has had time to normalize...

Well 2000 was 7 years after expansion. From that point era fell nearly a quarter before beginning to rise in 2015 again.
