On May 6, 1949, Bobby Shantz of the Philadelphia Athletics appeared in only his second game on the mound. The young hurler pitched nine hitless relief innings until the 13th inning when he allowed a run. Wally Moses helped the rookie during their half of the inning by hitting a two run game winning home run...

Is the ball juiced? On March 18, 1970 an experimental ball (dubbed X-5) was used in a Spring Training game. The Indians and Pilots had a combined 34 hits and Seattle won 19-14. Major League Baseball said the ball was only 5% livelier, but Sam McDowell disagreed saying in response to that claim, "Times 100!"…

On July 28, 1971, Brooks Robinson actually had a bad day during the sixth inning versus the Athletics, making three errors in one inning. The eleven time consecutive Gold Glove winner would still win number twelve…

On June 24, 1949, the New York Yankees signed a high school player for $1,000 on the advice of scout Tom Greenwade who said, "The first time I saw (Mickey) Mantle I knew how Paul Krichell felt when he first saw Lou Gehrig. He know that as a scout he would never have another moment like it."… Wow, $1,000, what a bargain! Best thousand bucks the Yankees ever spent.

And a mountain of money for a kid working the coal mines. It probably took about 5-6 months for him to make that much money. But more important was the change it could make in his life…

On October 2, 1972, Terry Forster of the White Sox stole second base and remained the last American League pitcher to steal a base until interleague play began during the 1997 season...
Wait. Terry Forster? Really? I guess it he could bat .397 in his career he could swipe a base…
Fat tub of goo- <David Letterman>

It’s a record that has been broken many times since, but when Bill Dickey caught over 100 games per year from 1929-1931 he was the first man to do so for 13 consecutive seasons… it wasn’t a time for sissies behind the plate back then.
Yogi Berra often gave Dickey platitudes for teaching him his skills behind the plate. As much as I love Berra, I still think Dickey was the greater of the two…

Joe Mauer won batting titles in 3 of his 1st 5 full years in the majors. In 2006 (.347), 2008 (.328) & 2009 (.365). Hrs still the only AL catcher to win a batting title.
Mauer was honored as national POY by USA Today in football in 2000 as a quarterback and baseball in 2001 as a catcher. No other athlete has received dual sport honors from USA Today.
Sometimes greatness comes with a warning label. Mauer was 4 years old when he was asked (or should I say his parents were asked) to remove him from t-ball because he was hitting the ball too hard for the other players…

Nolan Ryan, who pitched two no-hitters in 1973, had another memorable game on September 27, 1973. During that game versus the Twins, Ryan struck out Steve Brye during the eighth inning to tie Sandy Koufax's single season record for strikeouts (382). In the eleventh inning, with two outs and two strikes on Rich Reese, Ryan fired his last pitch of the season and fanned Reese to set a new single season strikeout record...

Ralph Kiner is the only HOF player who clubbed 50+ HR twice, but wound up with less than 400 HR (369).
Never a Yankee but Kiner now has a second cousin twice removed (whatever the hell that means) in IKF. The Kiner part is blood…

Never a Yankee but Kiner now has a second cousin twice removed (whatever the hell that means) in IKF. The Kiner part is blood… The Falefa’s must have been pansies. That name conjures up memories of Carl Dean Switzer, who met an untimely death at only 31 years of age… Xxxxxxxxxxxxcxxxxxxxxxxx ccxxxxxxxxxxcx On January 21, 1959, Switzer and a friend went to the Mission Hills home of Moses “Bud” Stiltz, to collect a debt Switzer believed he was owed. A fight broke out, during which Stiltz shot and killed Switzer. A jury later ruled the incident justifiable homicide...

In 1958 Red Schoendienst went to the doctor with pleurisy, whereupon the doctor informed him that he had developed TB and likely had had it for many years. He missed most of the next two seasons, but continued playing until 1963.
Looking at Red’s career I question his HOF credentials, but he was one tough SOB…
