Figured I'd start this thread for all the stupid thoughts that pop into our heads that don't really fit into any catagories...
Judge and Sanchez got a late start to their respective major league careers... Most good players get called up for their rookie seasons around their 20-22 year old seasons.. meanwhile Judge and Sanchez exceeded rookie eligibility around at their 25th and 23rd year old seasons. Not sure where I'm going with this but can you name some players who didn't have their rookie seasons til 25 years old and still had HOF or near HOF worthy careers? Is this a good thing for the Yankees because they get to have Judge cheaper for longer? Do you think Judge should have been called up sooner to take his "lumps" against ML pitching or did the Yankees play it correctly?
Sometimes I think the Yankees are too conservative with calling up young player (IE: Andujar) but am happy with possibly getting Torres up here before his 21st B-Day.. Regardless, I think the age shouldn't matter as much as how far along the player is with his development...
But I do wanna know the answer to my original question... because going through BR, I couldn't find any HoF/near HoF careers who had their rookie season at 25..

First, I have to mention that many of the old time HOF players started out when they were 18-21 years old, but back then very few baseball players were going to college first and then playing MLB...So we are dealing with a phenomenon that is only maybe 25-30 years old where there are a large number of players that are not only going to college, but finishing college before starting their careers...therefore they are reaching MLB later than the young players of "yesteryear"...
There was another phenomenon that got some players off to late starts, and that was when the blacks were first allowed to play baseball. So quite a few of those fellows from the late 40's and early 50's...and even to an extent into the early 60's had to prove themselves in the negro leagues and since the integration was not instantaneous, many of them had longer stays in the minor leagues than whites.
The Yankees were one of the last teams to integrate when they called Elston Howard up to the major leagues in 1955 when he was 26. To be fair to the Yankees, Howard did have a two year stay in the military in addition to having been a player for the KC Monarchs when he was only 19...
And Jackie Robinson was 28 when he got the opportunity to break the color barrier...So there's a Hall of Famer for you right there...Maybe the one Hall of Famer with the latest start of all...I'm not sure...Hoyt Wilhelm may have been older...I'll have to check...Yep...just checked. Wilhelm was indeed 29, and he turned 30 on June 26 of his rookie season...
So, oddly enough in spite of the college situation, I'm finding examples from many years back...

Near HOF - Jorge Posada? Bernie didn't have his first full season until 24 and had his breakout year at 25.

Ron Guidry isn't in the HOF but he was one of the best pitchers in the game until injuries ended his career. He was 26 when he had his first full season in the bigs.

Inger- I was talking more present day players... Jorgie and Bernie are good examples. Guidry as well.
How crazy is it to think that Trout is the same age as Judge and already has a career WAR of 55.2 through SEVEN seasons, finishing TOP 2 in MVP voting 5 times!!!! Harper is younger than Judge and already has 6 seasons... and 150 career home runs. Not at all a knock on Judge.. but just how amazing Trout and Harper are... especially Trout!!! Trout might wind up being the best ballplayer of ALL TIME!! It's a shame he's on the Angels... if he was on an East Coast team, he'd have so much more media coverage... It seems like Harper gets so much more coverage than Trout, when Trout is NO DOUBT the better (the BEST) player. Even Stanton gets more coverage than Trout... Judge got more coverage than Trout, but that's expected since he was a rookie. It's crazy that Judge is a rookie and the same age as Trout, who's been doing this for SEVEN seasons. I'm just in awe right now of how amazing of a player Trout is.
Before this Trout rant, I was coming on here to add to my Bullshit Thread. I was digging through some stuff last night and found a paper I wrote for school in 7th grade about how I was anti-DH. Surprising that I have the exact opposite feelings of the paper now. If I can get my scanner to work, I'll upload the paper on here when I get time. It'll certainly get a chuckle outta some people.

I wrote one opposing the batting helmet when I was in the 7th grade. Lol

I knew you were thinking about more recent players, but once I started thinking about it, I realized how many old time players were involved as well. I do think that the future will see more of these "late bloomers" because of college...and there is nothing wrong with that...

Thanks for the link Kay. I've been using Photobucket forever and it seems like every time I log into the site there's nothing but more ads and more lag time.

Hmmm. Third time I've posted this (and for some reason it's not posting), but...
Sierchio:
What was your grade on the DH missive?
Who in the heck told you the DH was implemented in 1939???
EDIT...It worked this time!!!

No grade on any of the papers I had.. it was some writing "portfolio" thing so the graded copies weren't in there..
LOL about the 1939 thing... Maybe I was trying to see if the teacher would fact check it LMAO
