www.si.com/longform/2015/1985/billy-martin/index.html. That link may be the best link to read about the fight. A reporter and eye-witness seems to have been quite impartial in his description, which makes it sound as though Whitson was the problem that night...though Martin had been aggravating Whitson by saying he didn't think he had the stomach to pitch in NY. Billy the peacemaker got his ass...or at least his nuts and arm...kicked... lol, thanks for link inger. The true Bronx Zoo days, it's amazing how calm things have been during the Cashman/Torre/Girardi era.

I wasn't thinking one iota about Billy Martin when I posted the information about Whitson. I had just happened to notice a "this day in baseball" column and clicked on it, and saw the Whitson signing had occurred on this date and felt nostalgic about those "bad old days"...Then you mentioned Martin, which added more nostalgia and walla! Something I had completely forgotten was dredged up. Baseball is sort of like that for me a lot of the time...I also pine for all of the days I missed from the beginning of pro baseball...

Today is a day of infamy in Yankees history. December 27, 1984 the Yankees signed a pitcher who had pitched to a solid record of 14-8; 3.24 only to see him completely bomb as a Yankee. That's right, Ed Whitson became a Yankee that day. It was said that by the time he left NY, he was so frightened to pitch there that he could only pitch on the road. A real psychological mess. Yet, his splits in 1985 showed: Home (NY) 4-2; 4.08 Road 6-6; 5.48Then in 1986: Home (NY, SD) 3-5; 5.43 Road 3-4; 7.08It would appear as though Whitson's road failures lead to the excess booing at home, which then lead to his psychological issues. Whatever was wrong with the man, he posted a career ERAs with his various teams as follow: San Diego 3.69; San Francisco 3.56; Pittsburgh 3.73; Cleveland 3.26; New York 5.38
I used to bartend in the late 70's and early 80's in Florida and waited on Whitson many times. He was actually a fun guy to talk to, but was a real hot head. Almost got into more than one fight. Waited on many Pirates back then. Stargell, Parker, Dale Berra, Jim Bibby and Lee Lacy to name a few. John Candelaria liked the big girls.

Desousa, I assume you may have seen this side of Candelaria as he sought out the big chicks... I never knew he was so nutty...nor physically unconditioned...

What browser are you using? I'm using Chrome and it won't let me do that... I click the photo and nothing happens... it doesn't "select" it so to speak. That's how I originally figured you resized it... like any other site... but nope... not a workings.. I even went back to edit the post and couldn't get the picture "selected" to shrink it.

I used to have a math teacher in Middle School called Mr. Kay... As you know since I added you on facebook, my first name is Kaseeb. When I ran for student council in 7th grade my campaign slogan was "Don't be a dweeb, vote for Kaseeb." I got something like 3 votes.
