Paxton, Sevy, Tanaka is a pretty strong top 3 starters for the playoffs. If the late season Happ resurgence is real we are in good shape for top 4. I think the way the ALDS rotation works they don’t need 4 starters. Which is why they are putting him in the pen this week.

Yea I was thinking ahead to the ALCS as well. But you're right. I saw that they were putting him in the pen.

I’m really hoping we don’t play the opener game this post season. All you have to do is pay attention to what happened today when the Jays opened against us with Font. There was also a Chad Green 4-run first inning opener appearance this season. Good reminder. Openers are for those who have no starter in a given game. Let someone else try to win the first championship using that strategy...

But they really had no choice with their roster.

I think the Yankees and Boone demonstrated pretty well that with the right pitchers it works quite well.

I saw that they were putting him in the pen. He could certainly be the Game 4 starter if they needed it but they can come back with their Game 1 starter. Game 1 is on 10/3 and Game 4 would be 10/8 on normal 4 days rest. They only need 3 starters for the ALDS. I think the idea about putting hi in the pen is less about an opener strategy and more about taking the 12-13 best pitchers regardless of whether they’ve starter or relieved this season and letting Boone deploy them where they can make the biggest impact. Severino in Game 4 is better than Happ and Happ out of the pen is better than Tarpley or Cessa.

Hmm, ok, never mind. Then they are going by committee for Game 4 but honestly as the Verducci article explored I don’t mind that. If they haven’t used Happ they’ll let him start but it doesn’t mean he’s going 5.
