Hooray for Trammell...Boo for Morris. He's a right-handed version of Andy Pettitte, though Pettitte has better numbers, even in the post-season...I would have also cheered the election of Whitaker...

Having never seen Morris play, I think his numbers scream good not great. Not sure what the compelling case for him was that kept him on the ballot for 15 years and now got him in by the veterans committee.

For what it's worth, here is my opinion. First, he is from the era that still valued wins very highly in considering who to vote for at Cy Young Award time. Secondly, he had a couple of very high profile post-season games that got people's attention. On other thing that I noticed is that there was apparently a reporter that was allowed to vote that had quite a man-crush on Morris. In 1992, when Morris posted a 21-7 record in spite of an ERA of 4.04 (101+), Morris finished in fifth place in the Cy Young Award balloting by virtue of one dope that gave him a first place vote...
Considerr that the unloveable Kevin Brown 21-11; 3.32 and Charles Nagy 17-10; 2.96 finished behind Morris in the voting, while those ahead of him were:
Dennis Eckersley 7-1; 1.91; 51 saves Jack McDowell 20-10; 3.18 Roger Clemens 18-11; 2.41 Mike Mussina 18-5, 2.54
I think Eckersley won as much because there were so many good starting candidates that the sportswriters had a hard time choosing one, though he got 19 of the first place votes in a runaway...but...regardless of anything else...how does Morris even FIT on that list as a candidate, much less deserve a first place vote? We all know the Hall of Fame is a good old boy network, and I'm assuming that same idiot has campaigned his ass off to help Morris get elected.
Suspiciously, Morris also got 2 first place votes in 1983 when he posted up at 20-13; 3.34 while Ron Guidry posted up at 21-9; 3.42 and Richard Dotson at 22-7; 3.23 received no first place votes...Yeah...somebody loves him some Jack Morris...I won't go over the results of 1991, but I also note that there were pitchers with better records that finished behind Morris. Maybe Morris was tapping his toe in restroom stall for somebody...or something...Not that there's anything wrong with that...right???
